Elon Musk has said he wants travel to the Moon to eventually become something that anyone can do, rather than an opportunity limited to astronauts and highly trained professionals. His comments reflect SpaceX’s broader ambition of making the Moon a more accessible destination while developing infrastructure that could support a permanent lunar settlement.

Musk recently described the idea of “Moonbase Alpha” as something that could be highly exciting and said SpaceX wants to make it possible for anyone who wants to go to the Moon to do so. He had previously expressed a similar vision, saying the company ultimately wants to take people to the Moon and Mars, rather than limiting space travel to a small group of astronauts.

The technology at the center of this ambition is Starship, SpaceX’s large reusable spacecraft. According to SpaceX’s plans, Starship could eventually deliver as much as 100 tons of cargo directly to the lunar surface if it can be refueled in orbit. Such capacity could allow missions to transport habitats, rovers, power systems, construction equipment and other supplies needed to establish a lasting presence on the Moon.

NASA is also working with SpaceX on a Starship-based Human Landing System for its Artemis program. The lunar lander is designed to transport astronauts and cargo between lunar orbit and the surface, with an elevator planned to help move people and equipment.

Musk has become increasingly focused on the Moon this year. He has described a potential lunar settlement as a “self-growing city” and argued that the Moon could be developed more quickly than Mars because missions could potentially be launched more frequently and reach the Moon in only a few days.

NASA has also announced plans for a sustained lunar presence, particularly around the Moon’s south pole. Proposed infrastructure includes systems for power generation, resource extraction, construction and autonomous robotic operations. Starship’s large cargo capacity could play an important role in transporting the equipment required for these projects.

However, significant technical challenges remain before these ambitions become reality. NASA’s inspector general has highlighted delays in Starship’s development and identified cryogenic propellant transfer as one of the major challenges. A crewed lunar mission could require numerous tanker launches to transfer enough fuel to a Moon-bound Starship while it remains in Earth orbit.

Therefore, while Musk envisions a future in which ordinary people could travel to the Moon, that goal remains dependent on major technological advances, successful Starship development, reliable orbital refueling and the creation of suitable lunar infrastructure.

Heidi, a German shepherd from Australia, became a hero after helping save her owner following a boating accident in Moreton Bay.

The incident happened after Heidi’s 63-year-old owner took his boat onto the water. The boat reportedly lost power on a Wednesday evening and began filling with water. During the incident, Heidi ended up in the bay.

The following morning, a fisherman spotted Heidi swimming in the water alongside a tackle box, wetsuit and other items believed to have come from the boat. Police were alerted and quickly rescued the dog. She was taken to a veterinarian, who found that she had not suffered any injuries.

What amazed rescuers was that Heidi had reportedly managed to tread water for around 11 hours while waiting for help.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Water Police began searching for her owner. Hours later, officers found the 63-year-old man clinging to a boat in Moreton Bay. He was taken to a local hospital and reportedly had no serious injuries.

After her rescue, Heidi was given food and a chance to rest at the police station. Officers even named her an honorary police dog for the day.

Her incredible endurance helped turn a dangerous boating accident into a story with a happy ending.

Wildfires are becoming more intense in many areas, making it harder for forests to recover naturally. Extremely hot fires can destroy not only trees but also seeds stored in the soil and at the tops of trees. As a result, damaged forests may need help to begin growing again.

One company, DroneSeed, developed a technology that uses groups of large drones to help restore forests after wildfires. The Seattle-based company describes itself as a reforestation service that can assist landowners and managers in recovering areas damaged by fire.

The company uses both seeds and young trees, known as seedlings, produced through its nursery operations. Instead of relying entirely on people to plant them across difficult terrain, DroneSeed sends heavy-lift drones over burned landscapes.

The drones release seeds inside specially designed containers called seed pucks. These containers are made from plant-based materials and include nontoxic ingredients, including spicy substances intended to discourage rodents and other animals from eating the seeds. Once placed on the ground, the seeds can begin the process of establishing roots and growing into young plants.

However, not every seed successfully becomes a tree. The results can depend on many conditions, including soil quality, available water, terrain, temperature, climate, and the particular tree species being planted.

The drones are considerably larger than ordinary consumer drones. According to the report, each aircraft is about eight feet in diameter and can carry a payload of roughly 57 pounds. DroneSeed typically operates several aircraft together, allowing the machines to cover large areas while working as a coordinated group.

The company said its system could allow restoration work to begin relatively soon after a wildfire has been extinguished. This can be particularly useful in areas where natural regeneration has been severely affected by intense fires.

Another important part of the company's approach is producing enough seedlings for large restoration projects. To address supply challenges, DroneSeed acquired Silvaseed, an established seed company, and expanded its ability to produce and store large numbers of seedlings.

The business model also involves carbon credits. Companies can purchase credits connected to forest restoration projects, helping provide funding for replanting. One example mentioned by CNBC was Shopify, which purchased credits connected with removing carbon from the atmosphere. The money supported the replanting of forestland in Oregon that had been damaged by the Beachie Creek fire.

DroneSeed's approach combines drones, forestry, seed production and climate-focused investment. While planting trees with drones cannot guarantee that every seed will grow, the technology offers another way to help restore large, difficult-to-reach areas affected by increasingly severe wildfires.

In the early 1990s, Japanese-born scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura achieved something researchers had struggled with for decades: creating a practical blue light-emitting diode, or blue LED.

Red and green LEDs had already existed, but producing blue light was much more difficult. The breakthrough was extremely important because combining red, green and blue light made it possible to produce efficient white light. This eventually helped transform modern lighting technology.

Nakamura developed his blue LED while working at Nichia Corporation in Japan. According to the report, the company had asked him to stop the research because it was taking too much time and money. He continued working on the problem and successfully developed the blue LED in 1993. He later left the company in 1999.

The invention became highly valuable because LEDs use much less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last considerably longer. Their efficiency also made them useful for applications ranging from household lighting to large electronic displays, traffic signals and other technologies.

However, Nakamura’s financial reward from his employer was initially very small. After developing the technology, he reportedly received only a $180 bonus from Nichia. He later sued the company over the patents and compensation related to his invention. In 2005, he received $8.1 million from his former employer following the legal dispute.

In 2014, Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention of the blue LED. They shared prize money of 8 million Swedish kronor.

The Nobel committee described the blue LED as a major breakthrough that revolutionized illumination technology. Before its development, creating efficient white LED light was not possible because blue light was missing from the combination needed to produce white light.

LEDs also offered important environmental advantages. They consume less electricity and generally last much longer than conventional incandescent bulbs. The report noted that LED lamps could last up to 100,000 hours, compared with around 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs and 10,000 hours for fluorescent lights.

Their low energy requirements also mean LEDs can potentially operate using inexpensive solar power, making them particularly useful in areas without reliable electricity grids.

The invention therefore went far beyond simply producing a new color of light. It opened the way for efficient white LED lighting and contributed to changes in how homes, streets, displays and other spaces are illuminated.

What began as a difficult scientific challenge became one of the most influential developments in modern lighting, eventually earning its inventors one of science’s highest honors.

The Trump administration has announced plans to repeal the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a policy that has protected millions of acres of national forest from most road construction and certain forms of development for about 25 years.

According to the report, removing the rule could potentially make nearly 45 million acres of national forests available for new roads, logging and drilling. The proposal was formally filed by the US Forest Service, which operates under the Department of Agriculture.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has argued that the existing restrictions are outdated and prevent forest managers from carrying out treatments intended to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risks. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz also said that more active management is necessary, noting that a significant share of inventoried roadless areas have high or very high wildfire-hazard potential.

Environmental organizations strongly oppose the proposal. Conservation groups argue that the roadless rule protects some of the country's remaining intact forests, wildlife habitats and important sources of clean water. They also dispute the administration's argument that removing protections would necessarily reduce wildfire risks, saying roads can increase human-caused fire ignitions.

The proposal has drawn particular attention to major wilderness areas, including Alaska's Tongass National Forest, one of the largest remaining roadless forest regions in the United States. Conservationists say the forest stores substantial amounts of carbon and supports wildlife such as bears, wolves and bald eagles. A new personalised c@ncer vaccine has shown promising results in a major clinical trial involving people with high-risk melanoma, a serious form of skin c@ncer. The vaccine was developed by Moderna and Merck, known as MSD in Europe, and was tested alongside Keytruda, an immunotherapy substance already used to treat c@ncer.

The phase-three trial involved more than 1,000 patients with high-risk stage two, three or four melanoma. The patients received treatment after undergoing surgery. Researchers compared patients who received the personalised vaccine together with Keytruda with those who received Keytruda alone.

According to the companies, the combination significantly increased the amount of time patients remained free of c@ncer and reduced the risk of the disease spreading to other organs.

The vaccine, called Intismeran, is designed to be personalised for each patient. Scientists first remove a small sample of the patient’s tumour during surgery and analyse its DNA. They then identify specific mutations found in that individual’s c@ncer and use mRNA technology to create a vaccine designed to target those mutations.

The goal is to train the patient’s immune system to recognise and attack c@ncer cells that may remain in the body after surgery. In this way, the vaccine is designed specifically around the characteristics of an individual’s tumour rather than being a one-size-fits-all treatment.

The results have been described as an important development in c@ncer research. c@ncer experts have said the findings could represent a significant step toward more personalised c@ncer treatment. However, they have also urged caution because the complete results have not yet been publicly released or independently peer-reviewed.

More detailed findings from the study are expected to be presented at a medical conference in October.

Experts have stressed that even if the final results confirm the early findings, the treatment would still need to pass regulatory approval before it could become widely available. In the UK, additional approval would also be required before it could be offered through the NHS.

Researchers are also testing similar personalised c@ncer vaccines for other types of c@ncer, including lung, bladder and kidney c@ncers.

The approach represents a shift in how c@ncer vaccines can work. Instead of broadly stimulating the immune system, the personalised vaccine aims to direct the immune response toward specific mutations in an individual patient’s tumour.

The UK government has announced a major plan to tackle rough sleeping in England, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledging to ensure that every person sleeping on the streets is offered accommodation this winter.

The government is providing a total package of $576 million, including an additional $139.17 million in new funding, to support the initiative. The aim is to get people off the streets before Christmas and provide them with emergency accommodation along with practical support to help them move towards more stable lives.

The accommodation could include rooms in shared houses or flats, bed-and-breakfast facilities, supported lodgings and warm spaces offering short-term refuge. The government also plans to provide intensive support for people dealing with issues such as mental health problems and drug or alcohol addiction.

The funding is also expected to help deliver more than 1,000 permanent homes over the next three years for people who have been sleeping rough.

Burnham said that nobody should be forced to sleep on the streets and argued that leaving people homeless can also place additional pressure on public services. People sleeping rough may repeatedly require hospital treatment, emergency services or police assistance, he said.

The plan builds on the Everyone In programme introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic. That initiative helped around 37,000 rough sleepers move into hotels and temporary accommodation after it began in March 2020. However, Shelter found that only about a quarter of those helped had later moved into settled accommodation lasting at least six months.

According to official figures, an estimated 4,793 people were sleeping rough on a single night in England in autumn 2025, representing a 96% increase over five years. However, charities say the official figures likely underestimate the true scale of homelessness because of the way the annual count is conducted.

Burnham has appealed to charities and faith organisations to help ensure that accommodation is offered to everyone who needs it. He has also pledged to donate 15% of his prime ministerial salary towards tackling homelessness.

The announcement has received support from homelessness charities, although some political opponents have questioned whether the government has provided enough detail about how the plan will be delivered.

The initiative comes as rough sleeping continues to rise across England. Supporters say providing immediate accommodation is an important first step, but charities have also called for more social housing and long-term measures to prevent people from returning to the streets.

Samsung Heavy Industries has partnered with global shipowner Capital Clean Energy Carriers and Lloyd’s Register to develop data centres that can operate at sea instead of being constructed on land. The proposed facilities would house large numbers of servers capable of supporting AI applications and other computing workloads.

The project is designed to address some of the major challenges facing traditional data centres, including the need for large amounts of land, electricity and cooling. By placing the facilities on ships, companies could potentially use seawater-based cooling systems while also gaining greater flexibility over where the data centres are deployed.

The planned floating facility is expected to have a capacity of 50 megawatts, which could support tens of thousands of AI servers. When positioned near a port or coastline, the facility could receive electricity from the power grid through underwater cables. It could also generate its own electricity using fuel cells powered by liquefied natural gas, according to the report.

Capital Clean Energy Carriers CEO Jerry Kalogiratos described floating data centres as a scalable and flexible option, with the added advantage that they can be moved when required.

The concept could also create a new business opportunity for shipowners. Instead of using ships only for transporting goods or other purposes, companies could potentially lease floating data centres to technology companies and cloud service providers.

However, operating sensitive computer equipment at sea presents significant technical challenges. Samsung Heavy Industries and Supermicro are testing whether AI servers can function reliably in a marine environment for extended periods. Their studies are examining the possible effects of ship movement, vibration, saltwater, humidity and moisture on computer hardware.

Samsung is not alone in exploring this technology. Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines is developing a 73-megawatt floating data centre with Turkish energy company Karpowership, with plans for a 2027 launch.

Elsewhere, China has begun operating a 24-megawatt underwater data centre near Shanghai, while US-based Nautilus Data Technologies already operates a smaller 6.5-megawatt floating data centre on a barge at the Port of Stockton.

Samsung's proposed project highlights how the rapid growth of AI is pushing companies to explore unconventional locations and technologies for building the enormous computing infrastructure needed to power the next generation of AI systems.
