"We pride ourselves in being "progressive" but the reality reflects something else. It's about time we open up our minds and think about this community. They deserve to live without having to worry about their safety."

It is important to develop coping strategies for times of emotional distress - distracting oneself is a good tool, but finally introspecting if it’s a rather troubling matter will always help.

Sulabha Subramanyam's advice? Break away from the source of distress for some time; it’s like a pressure cooker - you have to let the steam cool down. She spoke about the 4 A’s as an effective strategy - Be Aware, Accept that you are disturbed by something, Acknowledge what it is and that there is a way out of it and then Act. She left with a concluding statement – be grounded and in touch with reality; being delusional only works in the movies.

Dr. Vivek Belhekar enlightened the audience with anecdotal explanations for the warning signs and risk factors associated with individuals who are at a higher than normal risk of self-harm. He repeatedly emphasised the importance of talking as a means for dealing with such high-risk individuals. "When people tell us about their day," he said, "and they complain about how annoying their boss is, for example, they're not simply talking about that external experience. They're telling us about their inner experience."

Maybe we can deal with this pressing social concern better, simply by talking.
