"For all the working aspirants, CAT has always been a concoction of sugar and spice while juggling with the job and preparation. But generally the weekend is yours and you can devote more hours as compared to the hectic weekdays. Well, that wasn't the case with me. I always had office on alternate weekends with 12 compulsory working hours making the entire journey onerous. Even the weekdays weren't a cakewalk. The project I was associated with had rolling shifts including the dreadful night shifts. Being my first attempt at CAT, I needed more hours for brushing up my concepts followed by myriad mocks. The dream to join a premier B-School propelled me to not give up.

I joined the weekend classes at TIME and gave my first mock in January. For the next 9 months, intensity of my dedication kept fluctuating and so did my mock test scores. From the highest 97 percentile to the lowest percentile in 70s, I kept tussling with my weaker topics (Reading comprehensions in my case). So aptly said, "CAT is not a sprint, but a marathon." It is tough to maintain the same intensity especially when you start early, risking saturation. I ended my marathon with a mediocre score card - 96.88 percentile. Instead of sulking over the results, I started preparing for the phase most talked about - WAT/GD/PI. Got calls from all the new IIMs with interview scheduled in less than a week. This time the army was more than war ready. Cracked the interview and converted all new IIMs. Sigh of relief!
"
My take on phase 1 preparation:
As per the latest pattern of CAT, verbal section had more number of RC questions. A good reading speed will help you save minutes on a whole. Trust me, reading helps. A lot. Also, all your notes(Formulas and Tricks) should be ready to read anytime. Especially while revising before the D-Day. And the nitty-gritty of CAT - MOCKS! and more than that the analysis of your mocks. Do not shun the mocks with low score, pay more attention towards them. Because, before the curtain rises my dear friend, you better have had enough rehearsals.

All the best! :)"

"This year was my second attempt to crack the most grueling MBA entrance test – CAT. After scoring a meager 76.28 percentile last year without preparations, I had a huge task at hand of taking a leap of 20+ percentile to get into my dream college.

I work at a digital marketing Firm in Mumbai as a Business Development Executive – Government Sector. As the name suggests, my job was as unstructured and unpredictable and had undefined working hours making it difficult for me to give time to the preparations. As a part of my KRAs, I was expected to meet clients frequently and build relationships with clients. Studying at work was just a myth. I took a two month sabbatical from work in order to study for CAT and other exams

Starting my preparations dedicatedly from the 1st of November, I brushed up my quants concepts from 10th standard text books and started giving Mocks right from day one. Also I joined IMS test series and started giving the sectional mocks. I used to score 95-105 marks consistently in the mocks with 80-88 percentile. With practice and improving on my weak areas, I scored 93%ile in a mock which was my highest among all mocks. Finally on the day of the CAT, I tried keeping calm and focusing on my strong points, I managed to score a decent 96.2 percentile in CAT.

With this score and a decent GD/PI, I have calls from all new IIMs and have converted IIM Raipur and IIM Kashipur as of now. All I can say from experience is that it is not difficult to crack the CAT if you study strategically in whatever time you have.

Advice and Tips to the Aspirants:
1. It is never too late to start preparing for CAT. It is still the 2nd day of June. 6 months to go! I had just a month to prepare, imagine what you guys can achieve in 6 months!
2. Don’t get demotivated if you are scoring low marks in Mocks. Analyse the mock in detail. Make a note of your weak topics. Practice 12-15 questions from those topics before the next mock. Following this method, you will have no weak areas by September end.
3. Try to take Online National Mocks which can give you a National percentile.
4. If you think your basics are weak, go through the 10th Standard and junior level text books. Believe me, it helps!
5. For verbal, follow any one course material either TIME or IMS and keep giving sectional mocks and Topic wise tests.
6. Generally aspirants from engineering background avoid Verbal. Please give equal respect to all three sections.
7. Keep a track on the current topics as it helps during the interviews.
8. Keep working hard.

Keep practicing and be positive. Your dream is just 6 months away from you and no one can stop you from achieving it. The joy and satisfaction of getting into an IIM is completely worth the hard work that it takes!"

"Hi, I'm Akshay Agarwal and will be joining IIM C for the 2016-2018 PGP. It has been a roller coaster journey. Rather than the preparation part I would like to discuss my journey to IIM C.
After completing my Btech from NIT, Nagpur with a 6,03 cgpa and no campus placement, I decide to take up a career in my field of interest i.e playing with numbers.

I started working as a CAT trainer with T.I.M.E., Mumbai and dediced that I will crack the CAT and get into a top B-school.
However, I faced a serious setback when I scored 99.37% ile in CAT and 99.94% ile in CET and still failed to convert any of my calls from IIM k, FMS and JBIMS.

I was dejected but soon decided that I will give another attempt and try my luck once more.
Identifying my reasons for failure I quit my full time teaching job and started a new venture in the healthy foods sector to learn basics of business from the ground level. Also continue teaching part time for my passion and expenses.
This year I scored 99.8%ile in CAT. Many people told me that my lack of corporate experience and teaching experience could be a negative in the interview process. I never let anyone take away my opportunity from me and converted IIM C, one of the most coveted B-School in India. A dream come true. When I look back I see a journey of persistence and determination, a will power to never give up.
The only reason that I have cleared the interview is the hard work and the self-belief that never lets me down.
For everyone else I would just say one thing, Keep Working hard, believe in yourself and always remember
“Success comes to those who work hard and never give-up”

"My preparation strategy for CAT was fairly simple. Attend the classes and start giving mock tests as early as possible. I only referred the study material provided by the coaching centre - online and offline. Since I loved solving math problems, I concentrated a lot on QA in the beginning. Once all the topics were covered, I started with my mock tests. The analysis of the test is the most important part. I used to plan the topics to cover in the week depending on the performance of the last test.

Tip: Find your weakness and put extra efforts to overcome it even if you find it difficult/boring. For example, I hated verbal. I found it boring and too ambiguous. So I gave very little time to VA as compared to other sections. As a result, I got some 86 percentile in the section. Make sure you talk to your teachers about your weaknesses and ways to overcome it. All the best."

"Managing job with studies was one of the major problems that I faced and in such cases qualitative study is the only choice I had. Solving mock test for 3 hrs and analyzing those for next 4-5 hrs really helped me a lot. Throughout my studies I solved about 50 mocks and I owe my success to these mocks. I was really weak in verbal and analysis of these tests gave me ideas about why my answers went wrong and what should be proper approach. This being the ideal time for starting preparation for CAT 2016, I would like to advice all the aspirants a couple of things. Do not over burden yourselves with much of study materials and books. Stay calm and do smart study. After all smartness ka zamana hai bhai.
After all we all need to work hard, but smartly. Wish u all the best!"
