Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI), is a Division of Tata Power Company Limited which is focused on developing technical and professional skills for aspirants and professionals in the Power Sector and Allied fields. Skills and knowledge are the drivers of economic and social growth of any country. A skilled workforce is the fuel that powers the engine of rapid economic growth and prosperity in the country. India is on the verge of becoming a major global economy, and the demand for skilled manpower in various key sectors in India is growing at a tremendous rate. Power is a prime mover of the Industry and the Indian Power Sector is poised for a huge addition in Generation, Transmission and Distribution capacity to provide 24 X 7 electricity all over the country. To make this possible the power sector projects a minimum additional 11 lakh skilled workforce by 2022. With the latest thrust of Government of India for 175 GigaWatts of renewable energy, the requirement of skilled workforce quantum jumps to nearly twice the earlier projections. Meanwhile, on the supply side, India's population continues to grow and the country today has one of the highest number of people in the world who fall in the working age group. This continuing demographic dividend can provide for the nation’s growing need for workers. However, a significant percentage of India's huge workforce lacks employable skills due to lack of education, training facilities, inadequate skilling, or lack of quality vocational training. This workforce needs to be skilled (or re-skilled / up- skilled) to improve employability and to ensure for them a livelihood pathway.

Over the past few weeks, our Solar Helper trainees in Wayanad have been getting hands-on with real wiring, real panels, and real on-the-job scenarios because a certificate means nothing if the skill doesn't hold up on an actual rooftop.

This training, under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, comes at no cost, with placement support once trainees are certified. No fees. No burden. Just a genuine shot at a solar career, right here in Wayanad.

🔹 18 years or older
🔹 ITI/CTS/ATS (final year or pass-out) in Electrician, Wireman, Electrician Power Distribution, or Electronics Mechanic
🔹 OR CITS (pursuing/pass-out) in Electrician or Electronics Mechanic

Half of Monday is behind us. What has it taught you so far?

On any training floor, the first half of a session is rarely about the big result. It is about the fundamentals: check the connections, follow the procedure, confirm it is safe before you begin.

Careers in energy are built the same way. A few lessons that hold from the first hour to the last:

1. Safety first, always. The best work is the work that everyone walks away from.

2. Get the basics right. Skilled hands are trained hands. Confidence follows practice, not the other way around.

3. Learn from those who have done it. Every good technician remembers the person who taught them properly.

The rest of the day is still open. One new thing learned before it ends is a strong Monday.

Our Safety + Skill Training of Trainers (ToT) at TPSDI Balasore took that difference seriously - practice yard visits, a transformer repair workshop, live safety demos, and a hands-on skill test to make sure every trainer leaves ready for the real world, not just the classroom.

For a 33 kV lineman, technical proficiency and safety awareness must always go hand in hand. Tata Power Skill Development Institute – Sambalpur recently conducted Skill + Safety training for TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited linemen at Attabira, combining classroom learning with hands-on practice on actual equipment.

The programme strengthened understanding of operating procedures, hazard identification, correct use of PPE and safe working practices. By embedding safety within skill development, we aim to build confident, competent professionals who perform efficiently while protecting themselves, their colleagues and the communities they serve.
