This essay explores the role of business archives in serving the business interests, and how history – distinct from the past – is created and revisions to it (or alternate interpretations) are prevented.

Archives have become an important and inexpensive corporate asset in today's world that shape a corporate identity by providing a narrative using selective management actions and decisions taken in the past. Ineke Deserno (2007) conducted a review of world's 50 largest MNC's public websites and corporate archives and observed that companies that have come under public flak for past actions – for example, cooperation with the N**i regime – open their archives to the public in order to rebuild public confidence and trust. How a business chooses to deal with an inconvenient past, of course, varies across time and geography. In this particular essay, the author has chosen to focus on Tata Group and draw conclusions based singularly on one Indian business group.

For Premchand, Good Literature Was About Truth and Humanity 31/07/2020

Munshi Premchand was born in 1880 in Lamhi, a village located near Varanasi. He was educated in a madrasa where he learned Persian and Urdu. Premchand had a lonely childhood since his mother died when he was seven and his father was always busy in his official duties. The task of writing provided him solace and he embraced it with open arms, creating Nonfiction and fiction of the highest order.
Premchand has been hailed by many critics as the first realist in Urdu and Hindi fiction. His works have the fragrance of the village soil and the sweat of the common man. Premchand’s life was marked by illnesses and tremors of poverty, but he still managed to produce literature of great literary merit. He wrote over three hundred short stories and fourteen novels, many essays and letters, plays and translations. So many years have rolled by but his works are still in print and have inspired the young and the old alike.
Premchand was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement and resigned from his government job. The influence of Mahatma Gandhi can be seen in his novel Karmabhoomi. Another interesting fact is that Premchand presided over the first All India Progressive Writing Association meeting held in Lucknow in 1936. These were anti-imperialist and left-oriented groups, inspiring people through their writings, advocating social equality while attacking social injustice and backwardness in society.
On the occasion of his 140th Birth Anniversary we have compiled a number of articles and stories associated with him which will help the interested reader to piece together the legacy of Premchand.

In this following podcast, from November 2019, Hannah Elias speaks to Jo Fox, Director of the Institute of Historical Research University of London, about her work on the history of fake news and how historical examples can inform contemporary debates on post-truth.
