Authenticity is the key– a good extracurricular activity idea includes your genuine interests and passions.

Parents need to think about what really excites your child and then help build that into an activity that makes a positive difference to the community.

Rutuja Deshmukh is a 7 year old eco-warrior from Mumbai. She was a part of Beach Cleaning Drive last year and possibly one of the youngest one out there.

Apart from taking conscious interest in keeping her environment clean, she also recycles a lot of material like plastic, cardboard and creates beautiful pieces of art from them for her craft activities.

Sharing her thoughts Me and Sea which were jotted down by her mother and here we share it...hope you will love to read and contemplate on her thoughts....

ME AND SEA

Beach, just by thinking about it we get a picture with Fresh Air, Tall Coconut Trees, smooth sand and most importantl clear blue water with beautiful creatures of God , Sea animals....
But this picture is getting ruined day by day....Air is polluted, trees have been cut, sand is full of plastics and our Sea Animals are choking because of Trash...
Now think ,who is spoiling our picture?? the answer is WE..
Yes, We humans are not taking care of what we have got from nature and one day we will loose everything.
So friends, it's high time we have to start correcting our mistakes by "Clean Beach Drives" and make our picture beautiful again like before.
Myself Rutuja has done this, now it's your turn.Go for it...

HOPE-

Hope is not just only a soulless word.
She is your backbone when your desperate pleas go unheard.
Hope throbs inside every despairing person's heart.
The long awaited light at the end of the tunnel dark.
Elpis singing cheerful tunes with zest inside her merry little bubble.
You can hear her even during the most turbulent troubles.
She pushes through the most savage of storms,
And whistles gaily with the sea breeze horn.
Neither a knight nor a bounty hunter wading across the hundred seas,
Can seize this little bird, dancing above their fleets.
For Elpis resides in each one's soul ...A safe little haven of it's own.
Cushioning your spirit with laughter and gaiety,
Flowing eternally from her cornucopia of plenty.
And in your dreams when you see her encouraging smile,
You know that she will be with you for a while.

The proverb,”All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is said to have first made its appearance in the mid- seventeenth century. Albeit cliched, it still holds true.

In order to augment a child’s holistic development, one has to look beyond the realm of academics. It is imperative to look beyond the classroom for most skill sets are developed outside of it.

The rapid advent of technology has ensured that every child now has access to a smart phone and as a result, spend more time indoors surfing the internet or gaming than outdoors. This is slowly leading to children leading sedentary lifestyles and becoming socially inept.

Extra curricular activities not just provide a much needed break from studies but also help develop a child emotionally, physically and psychologically. New interests can be explored and it paves the way for a child to think critically.

Activities beyond a classroom often work in building a child’s self confidence and understanding his/ her strengths and weaknesses. They instil skills that enrich your life for years to come and play an important role in improving a child’s overall demeanour.

It is rightly said that more lessons are learned outdoors than in a classroom. For skills like teamwork and respect for social values, customs, rules and individual differences are borne not of a school but out of doors. By Anita Singh
