About the Book:
M. V. Dhurandhar (1867–1944) was a renowned Indian artist and respected teacher at the Sir J. J. School of Art. He was a painter with an exceptional grasp of both oil and water colour techniques, and a British government recognition of 'Rao Bahadur' for his works, which were primarily figurative in nature. Following the death of Raja Ravi Varma, Dhurandhar created and popularised figurative compositions that combined human drama, Indian aesthetics, and Western techniques. This book attempts to focus on Dhurandhar's major and newly identified artworks from various times of his life, thereby reflecting his artistic progression. It expresses his artistic personality and sensibilities, serving as an extension of his Marathi writings. His paintings also showcase the fashion and customs of the colonial rule and Indian Princely States. He was a gold medallist from Western India and a beloved artist of the island city of Bombay, who had created an artistic environment with his English and vernacular periodical illustrations, postcards, posters, chromolithographs, etc.
