🚨 DON’T DO THIS! — EXTRACTION EDITION

🦷 New dentist? Never start an extraction without assessing the tooth first.

You see a badly broken tooth and think:

“Let’s just extract it.” ❌

STOP. ASSESS FIRST.

Before picking up the forceps, check these 3 things:

1️⃣ CLINICAL ASSESSMENT
• Mobility
• Remaining tooth structure
• Periodontal status
• Accessibility and visibility

2️⃣ RADIOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT
• Number and shape of roots
• Root curvature
• Bone support
• Periapical pathology
• Any other factors that may increase difficulty

3️⃣ DIFFICULTY ASSESSMENT
Ask yourself:

👉 Is this a routine extraction?
👉 Is surgical extraction more appropriate?
👉 Do I need to modify my approach—or refer the case?

⚠️ Why does this matter?

Poor assessment can lead to unexpected complications, unnecessary trauma, root fracture, and a routine case turning into a difficult one.

✅ Remember:

DON’T EXTRACT WHAT YOU HAVEN’T ASSESSED.

Diagnosis → Assessment → Plan → Treatment
