This month, we're focusing on raising awareness about Perceptual Disabilities. To understand how perceptual disabilities occur, it is important to understand the different stages of learning. They are:
- Input: Initial entry of information into the brain
- Integration: Processing of this information
- Memory: Storing and remembering this information
- Output: Ability to convey that information later on.
Perceptual Disabilities occur at the Input stage where the child is not able to receive information through their kinesthetic, visual or auditory senses. It does not mean that the child cannot see or hear but that they cannot process that information. Also, because the problem occurs at the first stage, all other stages may also be affected.

Perceptual Disabilities are a type of Specific Learning Disabilities. They are characterised by difficulty in processing information received from touch, smell, hearing, seeing and taste. Good perceptual skills are necessary for activities such as reading, writing, completing puzzles, cutting, drawing, completing math problems, dressing, finding your sock on the bedroom floor, finding a page number on the textbook in the classroom as well as many other skills.
When a child faces difficulties in carrying out these everyday tasks, their self-esteem suffers and their academic and play performance is impacted.

Depending on its severity, a diagnosis can be really hard on a parent. If you find out your child has a learning disability, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- A learning disability does not determine the course of your child’s life. It is a battle you can fight.
- Learn more about the diagnosis and learning disability in question. The more you know, the more you can guide your child.
- Discover ways in which you can be your child’s advocate. Inform and educate their teachers.
-Always remember, you are the biggest influence on your child. If you approach this with optimism, they will follow your lead.
Lastly, know that the learning disability does not define the child. They are so much more than a diagnosis!
