On February 28, 2022, the Department of English hosted its annual Nobel Oration on the works of Abdulrazak Gurnah, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, 2021.

The talk titled, “Memories of Migrations: Introducing Abdulrazak Gurnah”, was delivered by Dr. Dhrupadi Chattopadhyay from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.

The Department of English organised a RUSA-supported Add-on Course on “Memory Studies” from December 22, 2021 to January 19, 2022.

The resource persons unravelled the links between memory and a wide range of areas of study, namely, notions of home and identity, oral traditions, visual narratives, gender, trauma, partition, Anglo-Indian identity, food, literary history and spaces.

The course introduced the participants to an emerging, multi-disciplinary field of study.

Back in February, the Department of English, Sophia College (Autonomous), Mumbai, presented Qissa, its first-ever student-led literature festival. 🌺💖

The theme for this year’s edition of Qissa was “Diaspora, Culture and Identity”.
Here, we explored the intersections of various topics – food, gender, war, caste, race, and many more – within diaspora studies.
