As a UI designer, your primary responsibility is to create visually stunning and intuitive user interfaces. However, the design process doesn't end there. Ensuring a smooth handoff to developers is crucial for the successful implementation of your designs. This is where learning the dev mode in Figma can be a game-changer.

Firstly, mastering the dev mode in Figma allows you to better understand the technical constraints and capabilities of the development process. By familiarizing yourself with the tools and features available in the dev mode, you can design with a more informed perspective. This knowledge enables you to create designs that are not only visually appealing but also feasible for developers to implement efficiently.

Secondly, the dev mode in Figma provides a wealth of valuable information that can streamline the handoff process. Features like code snippets, responsive resizing, and layer information can help developers quickly understand and integrate your designs into the codebase. This level of transparency and collaboration reduces the risk of miscommunication and ensures that the final product aligns closely with your original vision.

Moreover, the dev mode in Figma facilitates real-time collaboration between designers and developers. By working together in the same platform, you can address any issues or questions as they arise, fostering a more seamless and iterative design-development workflow. This collaborative approach not only enhances the final product but also strengthens the relationship between the design and development teams.

In today's fast-paced and agile development environments, the ability to bridge the gap between design and development is paramount. By learning the dev mode in Figma, UI designers can enhance their skills, improve the handoff process, and ultimately deliver more successful and impactful projects.

While the exact visual settings of buttons would depend on existing design systems and the brand, there are some common states that UI designers would usually simulate in their prototype to guide developers.

By switching the states of a button, end users should be able to recognize what a button is able to do at the moment.

For instance, having a disabled button would imply that the option is currently unavailable to users (e.g. options for paid users only).

As such, it is crucial for UI designers to communicate these visual states to developers in order to avoid confusion during the build phase.

What is whiteboarding? In many UX design interviews, candidates will be asked to participate in a whiteboarding session. This involves the interviewer presenting a design challenge and having you work through it visually on a whiteboard.

The whiteboard allows interviewers to evaluate your process. They want to see how you think through an open-ended problem from start to finish. Effective whiteboarding demonstrates your critical thinking, creative strategies, and user-centered methodology.

When whiteboarding, talk through each step out loud. Start by understanding the problem and users' needs. Brainstorm different solutions and how they might work. Refine ideas by considering users' goals, pains and gains. Show prototypes or flows with sketches and diagrams. Organize your thoughts structurally on the board.

Creating a drop shadow in Figma is easy. Still, there a several things that UI designers should pay attention in order to make their drop shadow as realistic as possible.

1. Use a shadow color that corresponds to the color of the object for a slight glowing/highlight effect.

2. Lower the opacity, usually between 10-30%. Real shadows are rarely completely opaque.

3. Add blur to soften the edges, between 2-10px depending on the size of the object. Hard edges don't look natural.

4. Position the shadow slightly below and to the right of the object, not directly below it. Light comes from above.

5. Adjust the size, smaller objects should have smaller shadows and scaled proportionally.

Minimalism is a recurring trend in the world of UI design, and some UI designers are advocating it as some sort of ultimate goal. However, it’s time to understand why minimalism should be a natural product of good design practices, instead of an end goal itself.

Find out why minimalism is not always good for your end users.

Gradient colors seen in nature, like sunrises, sunsets, foliage, and seascapes, have evolved over millions of years to appeal visually to humans. Our eyes and brains are adapted to find natural gradient colors pleasant and attractive.

When these same gradual color transitions are replicated digitally in user interfaces, they tend to feel more harmonious and soothing to users. This is because colors like orange and pink blends mimic the real world.

Conversely, computer-generated gradients of colors like the red-green combination shown in the video may look artificially harsh since they don't mirror anything in our natural visual environment. Such unnatural colors could be visually jarring or stressful on screens over long periods.

Why voice should never be your default input method

Voice assistants like Siri and Alexa have become ubiquitous, but relying solely on voice input for digital interfaces poses some significant usability issues. While voice can be useful as a supplement to other inputs, it should not be the only way to control a device or service.

With AI being the talk of the town, a lot of UI designers are still figuring out how AI could help them produce superb design. But still, there are other design trends that one should be aware of in the upcoming year.

Here are 4 major UI design trends that are emerging in 2024!

#2024

“Fix issues, don't cause new ones - that's user-focused design.”

Creating problems while trying to fix them might sound funny at first, but in a lot of case studies, it’s quite common to such examples. For instance, trying to add authentication widgets might solve security problems, but it’s very easy to overdo it and harm the user-friendliness of other functions at the same time.

As more companies develop voice assistants, chatbots, and other AI-powered interfaces, a new role has emerged in UX design - the conversation designer. Conversation designers play a vital part in shaping how humans interact and communicate with technology through natural language.

So, what exactly does a conversation designer do? At its core, conversation design is about crafting intuitive dialog experiences between people and computer systems. Conversation designers map out how conversations will flow, considering aspects like tone, response time, and opportunities for clarification or feedback.

They ensure the language used by AI feels natural to users by testing various phrasings and statements. During design, conversation flows are storyboarded to outline possible pathways a discussion might take. Edge cases like slang, jokes, or erroneous inputs need preemptive handling.

To build empathetic and helpful systems, conversation designers conduct user interviews and test prototypes iteratively. They analyze feedback to refine responses, expand the scope of topics an AI can discuss fluently, and prioritize user goals over all else.

As technology progresses, so too does the role of a conversation designer. Issues like transparency in AI limitations, privacy safeguards, and accessibility become increasingly important to address proactively.

At its core, a conversation designer's goal is to apply user-centered principles to craft dialog experiences that are simple, helpful, and enjoyable for any person interacting with AI through natural language.

17/01/2024

“Great design is actually 100% empathy and 0% ego.”

User research indicating designs that you might think are not the best solution is a common scenario in the field of UI design. However, it is always safer to start with the option that the users like rather than the option that you like, because the whole point of doing research is to eliminate assumptions rather than propagating them.

15/01/2024

As UX designers, our goal is to create products and services that genuinely meet people's needs. To do that well, there is no replacement for talking directly with real users. While surveys, virtual focus groups, and other remote methods have their place, they cannot give you what a good old-fashioned conversation provides.

During an in-person discussion, you see how someone actually uses an interface or performs a task. You witness their emotions, confusion, or complaints as they happen. Subtle things like hesitations, expressions, and workarounds come to light that a survey will never reveal. Remote methods also lack the flexibility to follow unexpected discussion paths that lead to new insights.

Conversations are where you gain rich context about people's lives and experiences that inspire new design ideas. For example, chatting with a busy mom led one team to redesign a medical app in a way no focus group ever could have suggested. True empathy comes from listening without assumptions to understand user frustrations and goals on a deeper level.

Talking to users face-to-face builds trust and rapport that elicits honest, thoughtful feedback. People open up and share more candor about what they really think when conversing with another human, not answering predetermined questions.

While remote methods have a place, especially for scalability, direct conversations will always be needed to truly understand user needs and pain points from their perspective. The insights gleaned can make or break whether a design solves real problems in a way that delights. So go talk to real people - it's time well spent for enlightening UX.

12/01/2024

"At its best, UX design creates a beautiful marriage between tech and humanity.”

Even with all the possibilities enabled by data-collection tools, UX designers should still rely on their gut instincts to spot inefficiencies in their design. This is the reason why the human factor could never be replaced in this field of work.

10/01/2024

It's important to get feedback from real users when designing products. But finding people to test with can be tough. Doing the searching yourself allows for better control over the process.

Outside companies don't understand your product as well as your own team. They may miss important details when choosing who to talk to. Your recruiters get to know the designers and products inside and out. This helps them find exactly the right people.

Handling recruitment internally means users can schedule sessions and meet faster. Working with an outside company often causes delays. Faster testing lets designers make changes and improve the product quicker.

Users recruited by your team feel their opinion matters more. They feel like they're really helping to create the product instead of just doing a job. This leads to more useful feedback.

Your recruiters can also take advantage of unexpected help. Asking coworkers or customer support who talk to users daily may know great people to try things out. Being flexible allows impromptu testing when quick answers are needed.

Doing it yourself keeps costs reasonable while improving quality and speed significantly. Design changes happen sooner since user input goes straight to designers instead of getting lost along the way. The end result is a product that truly meets people's real needs from the beginning.

07/01/2024

"Focus on the user and all else will follow.”

Any major changes that a team pushes should be backed with actual user research, it is time to acknowledge that assumptions made by discussions alone rarely matches what the end users actually thinks.

05/01/2024

When building a good user experience, what you say and how you say it are really important. Designers focus on the look and feel, while writers focus on the words. But the best experiences happen when these two work together.

No matter how nice a design is, it won't mean much without good content. And even great content won't stand out if the design is messy or hard to use. The goal should be teaching people something in a clear way. To do that, designers and writers need to collaborate from the start.

Design shapes how info is presented on the screen. Writers determine which ideas and messages to include. Together, they guide the user through topics in an organized way. Small tweaks to one part can affect the other a lot, too. Changing a layout may mean moving paragraphs around. More content could require expanding sections. Testing together helps catch problems before launch.

Teamwork is best for this kind of work. Separate teams can make content or design that doesn't quite connect. But together, they can map goals, test changes, and get feedback from real users. The final result will be more polished and useful than if they just did their own thing. Good UX balances what you communicate with how you say it.

03/01/2024

"UX design is elevating the digital from usable to usable and useful.”

Making an application usable should never be the sole focus of a UI designer. To truly excel in the field of user experience design, making the user flow delightful is an absolute necessity.

01/01/2024

For a long time, B2B software focused mostly on functionality, with user experience treated as an afterthought. But those days are over. Customers, even in professional business settings, now expect intuitive, delightful interfaces on par with top consumer apps.

With customer expectations higher than ever, B2B vendors need to bring the same UX rigor as household names like Slack, Salesforce, or Zoom to stay competitive. Employees evaluate software the same way they do in their personal lives - on ease of learning, enjoyment of use, and visual appeal. Friction-free UX translates to higher adoption and retention.

Younger generations especially have no patience for clunky, unintuitive interfaces. As these workers rise through the ranks, they'll demand polished experiences from all tools powering their workday. Those vendors ahead of this curve understand engaging UX leads to broader feature use, faster workflows, and stronger customer loyalty.

Gone, too, are excuses that B2B software has complex features precluding excellent design. When products invest in simplification, personalization, and aesthetic coherence, even robust functionality becomes approachable and delightful to use.

In a global war for talent, companies with best-in-class work tools will have an advantage. For B2B vendors, UX that elevates the employee experience deserves the same budget priority as any other competitive differentiator. Those who get this now will reap the rewards for years to come.

"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."

A good reminder for designers to constantly evaluate how understandably they are communicating and presenting ideas throughout the design process.
