How To Make Idli
Idli is a popular South Indian dish made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils. Here's how you can make idli at home:
Ingredients:
Β° 1 cup Idli rice
Β° 1/2 cup Urad dal (skinned black gram)
Β° 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds (optional)
Β° Water as required
Β° Salt to taste
Equipment:
Β° Idli steamer
Β° Idli plates
Β° Mixer grinder
Β° Mixing bowl
Instructions:
1. Wash the idli rice and urad dal separately in plenty of water, and then soak them in water for 4-6 hours. Soak fenugreek seeds with urad dal.
2. After soaking, drain the water from both the rice and the dal.
3. In a mixer grinder, grind the soaked rice into a smooth batter. Add water little by little, as needed.
4. Next, grind the soaked urad dal along with fenugreek seeds into a smooth and fluffy batter. Add water as needed.
5. Mix the rice batter and urad dal batter together in a mixing bowl. Add salt to taste and mix well.
6. Cover the bowl with a lid and keep the batter in a warm place for 8-10 hours, or until the batter ferments and increases in volume.
7. Once the batter is fermented, mix it well and check the consistency. If the batter is too thick, add a little water to get a pouring consistency.
8. Grease the idli plates with oil or ghee. Pour the batter into the idli plates, filling them up to 3/4th of the plate.
9. Place the idli plates into the idli steamer and steam for 12-15 minutes, or until the idlis are cooked through.
10. Once the idlis are cooked, remove the plates from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes.
11. To remove the idlis from the plates, use a spoon or a butter knife to gently loosen the edges of the idlis and then remove them from the plates.
Your homemade idlis are now ready to be served with chutney and sambar. Enjoy!
