The Kesaria Stupa in Champaran (Bihar), a towering monument to the Buddha's legacy, stands at a height of 104 ft, making it the tallest stupa in the world. In its heyday, it was 150 ft tall and much taller than the famous Borobodur Stupa in Java, a UNESCO Heritage Site. The Kesaria Stupa was damaged in the 1934 Bihar earthquake.

Locally known as Devala, which means "house of god," it is believed to have been built by Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE to commemorate the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana. The stupa is also said to mark the place where Buddha, in one of his previous births, ruled as a Chakravarti king.

In his travelogue, Chinese Buddhist monk Yuan Chwang, who visited India in the 7th century CE, mentions a number of stupas that he saw, including one that he said was located to the north-west of Vaishali. This stupa is believed to be the same one that is now found at Kesariya.
