Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Fireside Chat with Deepit Purkayastha, the co-founder and CSO of Inshorts, and calling it a wonderful experience would be an understatement.
Deepit generously shared his entrepreneurial journey with Inshorts, offering invaluable insights into the startup world. One particularly notable point he emphasized was the advantage of initiating a venture right after college, as the energy is at its peak during this time, and the cost of failure is comparatively lower.
The discussion delved into critical aspects of entrepreneurship, including understanding customer and market dynamics. Deepit provided ways to assess whether a startup is addressing the “right” problem and highlighted key signals and metrics for measuring product-market fit using practical examples from his experiences with Inshorts and the Public app.
The conversation went beyond general advice, providing deep insights into various facets of Inshorts. Topics spanned from the revenue model and the trust associated with a news platform to addressing biases, linguistic diversity, and, notably, the transformative impact of AI in the field.
One remarkable aspect of the Fireside Chat was Deepit’s humble and passionate approach, making the interaction engaging. His answers felt like a chat with a close mentor, and nowhere close to a formal interview with a two-time Forbes 30-under-30 honoree. It was truly enriching, gaining insights into startup dynamics and navigating the startup space from Deepit.

“It was a fantastic learning experience to engage in a conversation with Founder and Trustee Mr. Alok Mittal. My favorite aspect of the session was gaining insights into the disparities in entrepreneurship between Western countries and India. Discovering that the Indian markets were rife with untapped opportunities was particularly thrilling, as it highlighted the vast potential for innovation.
Another valuable takeaway from the session was the perspective on navigating turbulent market conditions. Embracing a mindset that looks at longer time horizons, specifically three to five years, provides a reassuring perspective that things tend to even out for everyone. This insight was much needed and has equipped me with a more resilient approach to challenges.
The discussion also extended to concepts covered in Design Thinking, emphasizing the importance of intellectual humility in solving problems from the customer’s perspective. It underscored the need to avoid becoming too attached to our own solutions. In the context of entrepreneurship, we delved into the significance of resisting the urge to hastily jump into solutions and instead dedicating ample time to comprehensively understand the problem.” writes from the TLF batch.
We are grateful to Alok for spending time interacting with the Fellows and sharing his unique thoughts on , , and careers.
