A very special outing for the students at Bright Sparks - a visit to the movies! Generously donated by Founder and Friend, Nimrat Kaur, the experience of going to a movie theatre is a rare one for most of these kids. Staff, students and trustees saw ‘Shashkot’ based on India-Pakistan relations at Bestech Mall Theatre. It was hugely appreciated by all.

As the new school year begins this April, Bright Sparks is welcoming new children into its classrooms. Here are some of them. Their ages range from 5 to 12 years old - none have been to school before. That is the unique thing that Bright Sparks does: it gives a primary education to kids who have missed out, meaning many of the kids are older than usual for their year group. But it is amazing how rapidly they catch up. As soon as possible they will leapfrog into older classes - and onward into secondary school. This small school makes a massive intervention in the lives of all its students.

A wonderful trip with classes 4&5 to the Moghul gardens at Pinjore. We strolled in sunshine, befriended a dog, sat and drew, teachers chatted, had a picnic - and I nearly forgot to say, we danced on the bus! But I’ll save that for another post…

Teachers… looking forward to seeing the crew again. This same group of teachers has been teaching, cajoling, and supporting kids through Bright Sparks School and beyond for far longer than I have been a trustee. I love spending time in their classrooms

It was Sports Day at Bright Sparks this week, where students ran, leapt and bunny-hopped their hearts out. A happy day for kids, staff and visitors.

It’s that time of year when Bright Sparks UK starts planning another Trustee visit to the school in Mohali. This is me, sharing an English picture book with a class, in February this year. In February 2024 I’ll be returning to catch up with India trustees, teachers, students and supporters. I’ll be going with two returning volunteers who will run English and computer coding sessions. And introducing recently joined UK trustee, Chris Gall. Should be a very interesting trip.
