ππ¨π¦ NEW IRCC TEMPORARY MEASURE: WORK PERMIT HOLDERS CAN STUDY WITHOUT A STUDY PERMIT
π Whatβs changing?
Eligible foreign nationals who hold a valid work permit may study in a course or program lasting up to 6 months without obtaining a separate study permit.
This could help workers pursue short-term:
πΉ Education and training
πΉ Professional licensing requirements
πΉ Skills upgrading
πΉ New credentials
πΉ Training that may help them advance into higher-skilled occupations
ποΈ Who could benefit?
The measure is intended to help temporary workers already contributing to Canadaβs labour market, including workers in sectors facing labour shortages, such as healthcare. IRCC specifically identifies upgrading skills, obtaining credentials and professional licensing as objectives of the policy.
π Key Eligibility Requirement
To qualify under the temporary public policy, the foreign national must hold a valid work permit. The exemption applies until the workerβs work permit expires or the public policy expires or is revoked, whichever happens first.
π
How long will this measure remain available?
The temporary public policy is scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2027, although IRCC states that it may be revoked at any time without prior notice.
π‘ This measure provides eligible workers already in Canada with an opportunity to develop new skills and credentials without having to complete a separate study permit application for qualifying short-term studies.
