What is Electromeric Effect (E) ?

Definition:-
The electromeric effect is a temporary electronic effect in which the complete π-electron pair of a multiple bond is transferred to one atom of the bond in the presence of an attacking reagent. This creates positive and negative centres in the molecule.

Types:

1. +E Effect: π-electrons move towards the attacking reagent.
Example: CH₂=CH₂ + H⁺ → CH₃–CH₂⁺
2. −E Effect: π-electrons move away from the attacking reagent.
Example: CH₃CHO + CN⁻ → CH₃–CH(CN)–O⁻

Important Points:-

1. It is a temporary effect and occurs only in the presence of an attacking reagent.
2. It involves π-electrons of multiple bonds (C=C, C=O, C≡C, etc.).
3. There is complete transfer of the π-electron pair, not just displacement.
4. It disappears when the attacking reagent is removed.
5. It causes polarisation of the molecule and helps explain addition reactions.
6. Direction depends on the nature of the attacking reagent.
7· It is different from inductive and resonance effects, which are permanent.
8· Important for understanding reaction mechanisms and intermediates like carbocations and carbanions.

Inductive Effects:-
The inductive effect is the permanent polarization of a covalent bond caused by the displacement of shared electrons toward the more electronegative atom. This shift in electron density is transmitted along a chain of adjacent sigma bonds in a molecule.
When atoms of different electronegativities form a bond, the electron cloud is not shared equally. The more electronegative atom pulls the electrons closer, acquiring a partial negative charge (\delta-), while the less electronegative atom is left with a partial positive charge.

Types of Inductive Effects:-

The effect is measured relative to hydrogen, which is considered to have zero inductive effect.
1. Negative Inductive Effect (-I Effect):-
Occurs when an atom or group is more electronegative than hydrogen. These are electron-withdrawing groups that pull electron density away from the carbon chain.
Result: The carbon atoms develop a partial positive charge.
Examples: Halogens (-F, -Cl, -Br, -I), Nitro groups (-NO2), Cyano groups (-CN), Carboxyl groups (-COOH), and Hydroxyl groups (-OH).

2. Positive Inductive Effect (+I Effect):-
Occurs when an atom or group is less electronegative than hydrogen. These are electron-donating groups that push electron density toward the carbon chain.
Result: The carbon atoms develop a partial negative charge.

Examples: Alkyl groups such as methyl (-CH3), ethyl (-CH2CH3), and tert-butyl (-C(CH3)3). The more branched the alkyl group, the stronger the +I effect.

Properties of chloroform..

Chloroform (CHCl₃) के प्रमुख गुण:-
Chloroform = Trichloromethane (CHCl₃)
