Career Kites and Clickites wishes you a very Happy Holika Dahan
Significance of Holika Dahan
According to the legend, a king named Hiranyakashyapa was a demon (Asura) who had the intense desire to be immortal. To fulfill this desire, he performed the required (Tapasya) penances until he was granted a boon by Brahma.
The boon gave Hiranyakashyapa five special powers:-
He could be killed by neither a human being nor an animal,
Neither indoors nor outdoors, Neither at day nor night, Neither by Astra (projectile weapons) nor by any shastra (handheld weapons), And neither on land nor in water nor air.
As this wish was granted, Hiranyakashyapa felt invincible, which made him arrogant. Hiranyakashyapa decided that only he be worshipped as a god. He punished and killed anyone who did not accept his orders. His son Prahlad disagreed with him and refused to worship him as a God. He used to believe in Lord Vishnu and hence, worshipped him.
This made Hiranyakashyapa furious and he made several attempts to kill Prahlad. King Hiranyakashyapa called upon his sister Holika for help. Holika had a special cloak that prevented her from being burned by fire. Hiranyakashyapa asked her to sit on a bonfire with Prahlad, by tricking the boy to sit on her lap. However, as the fire started, the cloak flew away from Holika and covered Prahlad. Holika burnt to death; Prahlad came out unharmed.
Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha β Half-human and half-lion, At dusk (when it was neither day nor night), Took Hiranyakashyapa at a doorstep (which was neither indoors nor outdoors), placed him on his lap (which was neither land, water nor air), And then eviscerated and killed the king with his lion claws (which were neither a Handheld weapon nor a launched weapon).
In this form, the boon of five special powers granted to Hiranyakashyapa was no longer useful. Prahlad and other humans got free from the fear of Hiranyakashyapa, showing the victory of good over evil. Since then, every preceding day before Holi is the Holika Dahan as a symbol of victory of good over evil.
