It was in 1990, six young men – Ningthoujam Deban Singh(M.Sc.Life.Sc), Ajit Yumnam(A.M.I.E.Mech), Kongkham Tomba Singh(M.Com.M.Phl), Chanambam Brojen Singh(M.Sc.Maths), Takhellambam Iboyaima Singh(M.Sc.Stats) and Md. Jalalluddin(M.Sc.Chem), who had the opportunity to study outside the state, decided to start a coaching class in the interest of the young students of Mayang Imphal and its neighbouri
ng villages. "SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE" was the name they had given to the coaching center, and the coaching classes for IX to XII standard students were formally started at the leased premises of N.Tomchou Hr.Sec.School from the 15th of December 1990. However, by the year 1992, the coaching center had gathered so much popularity that it needed expansion of its facilities. The founders put in a plan to construct a five room private building for the coaching center with the little fund they had. In the meantime, Chanambam Shanta Singh(B.A.Eng) also joined the team replacing N. Deban Singh who had then become a Professor in Manipur University. Now, despite financial shortcomings, a six room semi pucca building was constructed on a khasland in I.B Road Mayang Imphal. The cost of the building inadvertently far exceeded the fund in the books leading to a financial crisis, and the growth needed more manpower in the day to day business of the coaching center than the team could manage – both of which led to stressful times for the founders, which, if not checked, could affect the quality and popularity of the coaching classes. Iboyaima Singh had become an employee in Imphal Urban Co-op.Bank, and Md. Jalalluddin had joined Kakcing Khunou College as a lecturer. The remaining founders then decided it was best to salvage the situation by expanding further and formalising the coaching center into a full fledged English Medium Private School. Thus, on the 21st of January 1994, a financial crisis on the one hand and the intention to keep and maintain a good educational institution in the locality on the other, the four remaining unemployed youths Ajit Yumnam, Kongkham Tomba, Chanambam Brojen & Chanambam Shanta formally established the educational institution. They inducted additional teachers onboard and named the establishment "KHUMAN MAHEIKOL" (‘Khuman’ being the name of a local diety, and ‘Maheikol’ meaning: garden of learning, in Manipuri). A noble hearted man, Chanambam Biren Meitei, who had been impressed by the hard work of these founders, donated a land of 0.31 acre to help further expand the facilities of the Maheikol. KHUMAN MAHEIKOL thus, very soon, became a well founded English medium school with proper facilities, and the efforts of the founders and the teachers paid off when it was recognized by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur in the year 1995. However it was just the start of a journey. In the year 2006, another gentleman Khongkham Manglem Singh along with his brother Kongkham Tomba Singh (who was one of the founders) donated an amount of Rs 3 lacs, helping the school acquire a new plot of land of 0.97 acre near A.I.R Mayang Imphal, where a new double storied pucca building was constructed with the additional financial assistance from the Imphal Urban Co-op. bank. On the 21st day of January 2008, the new block was inaugurated and a total no. of 950 students was enrolled in both the old & new blocks. Now, Khuman Maheikol is well managed by a managing committee headed by its founder secretary Ajit Yumnam. Many Principals and teachers have served in the institute. Mrs. Sapam Chintamani was the first principal, Mr. Kongkham Tomba Singh the 2nd, Mr.Shyam Chongtham the 3rd, Mr. Gurumayum Dara Sharma the 4th, Mr. Sapam Ibomcha Singh the 5th and Mr. Naorem Manglemjao Singh is the 6th & present principal of Khuman Maheikol. In its journey so far, Khuman Maheikol has enjoyed support from its dedicated teachers and the Principals, the local community, its students and the guardians. Dr.Kh.Ratankumar Rs. 3 lacs. Khuman Maheikol wishes to continue to further education in the locality and additional support from noble & kind donors would be warmly welcome. While on this note, Khuman Maheikol wishes to thank all those who have supported and stood by the institute but whose names could not be included here; it has been a long journey, and it would not have been possible without all the support of the unknown faces. Thoi Takhellambam became the first student of Khuman Maheikol who could get into among the twenty five rank holders of High School Leaving Certificate Exam in 2011. She thus paved the way for other students of Maheikol to shine in the forthcoming exams. Then follows Chanambam Mokaju Meitei, the 10th position holder in HSLCE 2013. And Melody Khoirom topped the HSLCE 2015, thus encouraged all her juniors. Later, Chanambam Marshal came on the 13th position in HSLCE 2018, which was followed by Wangamlon Rajkumari on the 23rd position in HSLCE 2020. Khangembam Serena Devi and Asem Mona Chanu came on the 23th and 24th position respectively in HSLCE 22, thus brought Khuman Maheikol among the top schools in the state.
