NITK Surathkal Welcomes 2026–2030 Batch with a New Curriculum Designed for the AI Age

NITK Surathkal inducted the newly admitted B.Tech students of the 2026–2030 batch at the NITK campus on 18.08.2026. A total of 1,066 B. Tech students joined this academic year, comprising 834 male students and 232 female students.

Deputy Director Prof. Subhash Yaragal congratulated the incoming batch. "We are very proud of our students, who become responsible citizens and industry professionals of tomorrow," he said. "As the institute's motto goes, Work is Worship." Reflecting on his own journey of over three decades at NITK, he noted that the campus has been transformed and that students today have access to world-class facilities.

Addressing the gathering, Director Prof. B. Ravi told students that the next four years would bring profound changes in the world, which would shape their careers and life choices. "By 2030, your real competition for jobs may not be from fellow students but from AI," he said, noting that artificial intelligence already outperforms humans in "logical left-brain" capabilities such as reading, writing, remembering, locating, translating, and monitoring. He urged students to work on their “right-brain” capabilities—curiosity, creativity, intuition, emotion, empathy, ethics, context, judgement, nuances, and non-verbal communication—and combine these with AI to succeed in the future world.

Prof. Ravi highlighted that the institute's newly redesigned curriculum, developed over the past three years, is built to strengthen such human capabilities. Alongside theory and lab courses, students will undertake four categories of life-skill activities—physical (sports), cultural (creative arts), technical (model fabrication), and professional (communication).

He also pointed to a stronger institutional focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Students can pursue a parallel minor programme covering product design, fabrication, and business plan development, supported by NITK's alumni as mentors, co-founders, and investors. Prof. Ravi set an aspirational target for the batch: 100 new student startups over the next four years so that the number of job creators exceeds the number of job seekers.

The Deans, Chief Warden and other Institute functionaries delivered presentations on NITK's academic structure, research opportunities, campus facilities, and student life.

A separate program was organized for more than 1500 parents who came to the Institute. They were given a tour of the Institute facilities, followed by addresses by the Institute functionaries. The parents were urged to partner with the Institute in the progression of their wards and to regularly keep in touch with them.

With the induction of the 2026–2030 batch, NITK Surathkal begins a new academic year, shaping engineers for a future led by both human judgement and AI. Ministry of Education, Government of India, New Delhi

"In the AI Era, We Must Preserve and Strengthen Human Values": NITK Deputy Director

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, celebrated the 80th Independence Day on campus under the national theme "Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047," marking 150 years of Vande Mataram. Director Prof. B. Ravi inspected contingents of NCC cadets and unfurled the National Flag at the event.

The flag hoisting was followed by a parade featuring NCC cadets, students of the Kannada Medium School, and the Institute's security unit. The Director felicitated outstanding NCC cadets and staff for their contributions. Faculty, staff, and students also presented patriotic speeches and songs.

In his address, Deputy Director Prof. Subash C. Yaragal traced India's journey across three struggles for freedom—political, economic, and now, intellectual.

"Today, let us bow our heads in gratitude for the sacrifices of our national and regional leaders and of the millions of ordinary citizens who gave their careers, families, and lives in the freedom struggle. Because of them, we enjoy our political freedom today," he said.

He noted that the country's economic struggle for self-reliance, or Atma Nirbhar Bharat, was carried forward by early industries and industrialists and by millions of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that helped make India the world's largest economy today.

"But we cannot afford to rest. In the next ten to twenty years, we face one more struggle — for intellectual freedom, to think independently without external influence," Prof. Yaragal said. He urged the gathering to reflect on whether their views on education, employment, politics, religion, health, and life were truly independent or shaped by the constant, curated flow of information on social media.

"In the AI era, we must preserve and strengthen human values—curiosity, creativity, context, judgment, intuition, emotion, empathy, and ethics—to survive," he said, adding that nation-building begins in one's own office, lab, department, and home. He noted that NITK's new undergraduate curriculum has been designed with this in mind and called on teachers to uphold high standards of morality, ethics, honesty, and integrity as role models for students and staff.

The Registrar (i/c), Institute functionaries, students, staff, and family members attended the celebrations with enthusiasm. In line with the Ministry of Education's directive, NITK also took part in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, with the National Flag displayed across campus zones.

NITK Alumni Return to Give Back to Their Alma Mater.

NITK Surathkal marked its 67th Foundation Day this year with more than a celebration—with construction.

On 6th August 2026, the foundation stone was laid for a new Health Care Centre Annex on campus, funded entirely by NITK alumni. Leading the initiative were the 1986 and 1972 batches, whose combined contributions of over ₹1.3 crore anchored a total alumni fundraise of ₹1,75,10,554, joined by support from other batches, individual donors, and reunion drives.

The foundation stone was laid by Director Prof. B. Ravi, in the presence of chief guest Prof. Venkappayya, Director of IIT Dharwad; Deputy Director Prof. Subash C. Yaragal; deans; faculty; staff; and the alumni whose contributions made the project possible.

Once complete, the ground-plus-one facility of approximately 3,100 sq. ft. will house a casualty ward, an ECG-nebulization room, a physiotherapy unit, and specialist consultation rooms, adding healthcare capacity for students, faculty, and staff across campus.

NITK Surathkal thanks the 1986 and 1972 batches, and every alumnus and donor involved, for this contribution to their alma mater.

🏆 NITK Surathkal Wins First Place at Aerothon 2026!

We're proud to share that a team of four NITK Surathkal students — Omkar Kharade, Shubham Shah, Diya Taneja, and Maxon David Nazareth—has won first place at Aerothon 2026, a national-level aerospace hackathon organized by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in collaboration with IIT Indore.

Competing against more than 640 teams from across the country, the team advanced through a preliminary round to the final 20, and then went on to win the top prize at a 24-hour hackathon held at IIT Indore on August 7–8, 2026.

Their winning project tackled a real challenge in aerospace engineering: building a physics-informed digital twin for real-time monitoring of turbojet engine health, using machine learning to predict potential failures before they happen—technology with real applications for engine manufacturers, maintenance providers, and airlines.

The team is now looking to develop the project further and is open to guidance and connections from alumni and industry experts in the aerospace sector.

Hundreds of NITK Alumni Return for 67th Foundation Day, 1981 Batch Gifts Campus Solar-Powered Charging Stations and Electric Buggies 🚙

Alumni of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal, across multiple graduating batches, returned to campus in large numbers to mark the Institute's 67th Foundation Day on August 8, with over 100 alumni from the 1981 Batch alone joining the celebrations with their families. The occasion saw the formal handover of two electric buggies to the campus under CAMPUS 81, a mobility initiative driven by the 1981 Batch.

CAMPUS 81 (Collaborative Alumni Mobility Partnership for University Sustainability) is an ongoing project under the CAMP ("Contribute to Alma Mater Projects") programme, launched by the 1981 Batch Alumni in 2018. The initiative, with a total project cost of ₹17 lakh, comprises two electric buggies, a solar-powered charging facility, and a GPS-enabled campus tour and information system, together forming a mobility ecosystem for the campus. The project was designed, fabricated, and led by Dr. Pruthviraj U. (Associate Professor and Project Coordinator of CAMPUS 81) and his team.

As part of the initiative, NITK Surathkal has introduced the CAMPUS 81 Electric Buggy to provide transportation for senior citizens, visitors, alumni, students, and persons requiring mobility assistance. The buggies run on solar-generated power from the newly installed charging facility and will operate alongside the GPS-enabled tour and information system, which is designed to guide visitors and newcomers around campus. The project supports NITK's broader goal of developing a sustainable, net-zero campus.

Present at the ceremony were Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal; Prof. Venkapayya Desai, Director, IIT Dharwad; Prof. Prasanna Belur D., Dean (Alumni & Corporate Relations); Dr. Pruthviraj U; and alumni representatives from across batches, including the 1981 Batch.

CAMPUS 81 was jointly conceived and executed through the collaborative efforts of the Centre for System Design (CSD), and SEARCH (System for Emergency Assistance, Response & Communication Hub).

This initiative was made possible by the vision and generosity of the 1981 Batch alumni. NITK Surathkal expresses heartfelt thanks to all contributors of CAMPUS 81, including R. NITK Surathkal marks 67 years—and a new academic partnership with IIT Dharwad

National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, celebrated its 67th Foundation Day today, honouring the legacy of founder Shri Ullal Srinivasa Mallya. Director Prof. B. Ravi hoisted the Institute flag and led the tributes, joined by 200+ faculty, staff, students, and alumni on campus.

Marking the occasion, NITK signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IIT Dharwad, establishing a framework for academic and research collaboration between the two institutes—spanning joint research projects, faculty and student exchange, industry-sponsored R&D and consultancy, and joint publications and patents. The MoU was signed by Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal, and Prof. Venkappayya R. Desai, Director, IIT Dharwad.

Prof. Desai, an NITK alumnus of the 1986 M.Tech batch, was the Chief Guest for the day. His address touched on approaching AI without apprehension, the value of pairing emerging technology with human intuition and traditional knowledge systems, and what distinguishes a truly effective teacher—drawing on examples ranging from Swami Vivekananda to Adi Shankaracharya.

Prof. Ravi outlined NITK's Vision@75, the Institute's roadmap for pursuing global excellence while staying rooted in local and regional relevance, and announced that NITK will host the Global Convention 2026 on campus this December.

The day also recognised 12 staff members completing 25 years of service at the Institute, students who excelled in their Class X and XII board examinations, and scholarship recipients supported by the 1981 batch of alumni.

NITK Surathkal Convenes Industry and Alumni Leaders for C-VISTA Founding Conclave 📈

National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, hosted the Founding Conclave of the proposed Centre of Excellence for VLSI Innovation for Systems, Technology & Applications (C-VISTA) on August 3–4, bringing together industry, academia, government, and NITK's alumni network to advance semiconductor innovation, talent development, and industry collaboration.

The conclave was led by Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK, with key contributions from alumni and industry leaders, including Navin Bishnoi (a 1998 batch alumnus), Vice President and India Country Manager at Marvell Technology and Chairperson of IESA; Rohit Bhat, Founder of the Silicon Beach Program; and Padmanand Warrier (a 1981 batch alumnus), Founder of Warrier H.E.A.R.T. Hub for Sustainable AI. Prof. Subhash C. Yaragal, Deputy Director; Prof. Udaya Bhat, Dean-Research and Innovation; and Prof. Prasanna Belur, Dean-Alumni and Corporate Relations, also participated.

C-VISTA aims to position NITK as a hub for semiconductor innovation by connecting education, research, industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship. It will provide a platform for students, faculty, alumni, and industry practitioners to work jointly on real-world challenges, supporting the semiconductor and deep-tech ecosystem in Coastal Karnataka. Organizations participating in the conclave included KarMic Design Pvt. Ltd., EKA Mobility, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, Sierra Pinnacle, Anmaya Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Silicon Beach Program, Leanwatts India Pvt. Ltd., and TiE Mangaluru, along with NITK faculty, research scholars, and undergraduate students.

Prof. Ravi said C-VISTA could provide a platform for students, faculty, and industry partners to identify campus-level problems and develop semiconductor and VLSI-based solutions with wider societal applications.

Bishnoi delivered a masterclass on the semiconductor value chain, outlining opportunities for India in design, systems innovation, talent development, and ecosystem building. Sessions also featured industry practitioners Samarth Modi, Girish Desai, Gopal Krishna Nayak, and Ashish Guttedar.

A panel discussion facilitated by Warrier, with panelists Zoeb Karampurwala, Rudramuni, and Pruthviraj U, focused on C-VISTA's three founding verticals: biomedical devices and healthcare; climate and disaster resilience; and drones, electric vehicles, and robotics. Breakout sessions translated the discussions into action items.

The conclave concluded with agreement on a 90-day ex*****on roadmap, identification of faculty and industry champions for each focus area, and timelines for programme launch and formation of student cohorts.

NITK Hosts CII District Council Meeting; Director Highlights RITE Park Initiative

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) District Council held its second meeting at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal on July 29, bringing council members and industry stakeholders to the campus.

Director Prof. B. Ravi addressed the council, presenting an overview of NITK's initiatives in research, innovation, and industry engagement. He detailed the proposed Research, Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (RITE) Park, planned to support technology commercialization, startup incubation, industry-sponsored projects, and student innovation.

Following the address, council members toured the Central Research Facility (CRF), which houses the institute's analytical equipment for multidisciplinary research, and the IDEA Factory, NITK's makerspace and innovation hub.
