Neuroinflammation The brain has limited access to the immune cells from the periphery due to the presence of tight junctions at the blood brain barrier (BBB).

Dr. Anirban Basu’s Lab at National Brain Research Centre, India, focuses on studying inflammatory changes within the CNS upon viral infection and insult with bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Microglia are the brain macrophages, which raise an alarm upon invasion of pathogens within the brain and help remove the debris after any damage to the nearby tissue. However, viruses and bacteria manage to fin

d their way inside brain. Encephalitis is a common form of brain infection which in most cases is viral in nature. Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus which causes encephalitis. It is a member of the Dengue Virus family. Around 30,000 to 40,000 cases of encephalitis are reported each year in Asia alone. JEV extensively damages CNS, resulting in fatality in about one third of the patients. The Neuroinflammation lab run by Dr. Basu and his students aim to understand the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions and unravel the pathophysiology of JEV infection. This group is a platform for former and current members of Anirban Basu Lab at National Brain Research Centre to communicate with each other and others interested in neuroinflammation on Facebook.
