Please find the problem for Week 2. (Prize - Rs 200 Gift Card of Your Choice)

Problem Statement: A dam of 200 m height has created a water reservoir in the flow path of a river. The dam is provided with a vertical lift gate of 10 m x 10 m size and 50 cm thickness to control the discharge of water from the reservoir. The bottom edge of the gate is located at a distance of 20 m from the base of the dam while it is in a fully closed position. The gate is equipped with four rollers at its corners which slide over a guideway and facilitate the upward and downward motion of the gate. The gate, rollers, and guideway are made up of stainless steel. A rope and pulley arrangement is coupled to a motor to facilitate the opening and closing of the gate. Determine the required torque rating of the motor.

Note: This problem is more specific than the earlier one based on your suggestions and for this purpose, the evaluation criterion would be the practicality of the solution i.e. its implementation in real life and accuracy of the provided answer in reference to the expected one. Please clearly mention all your assumptions and formulas and calculations used to solve the problem.

ZIRKA | Week 1 Question is given below.

Problem Statement :
In a post office, a bucket elevator is required to transport the postal letters from the ground floor to the fifth floor of the building. The total height through which letters are to be raised is 15 meters and in each cycle of the elevator 10 kg of the payload is to be transferred. You have to propose the design of the system and determine the power rating of the motor to accomplish this task. The following points have to be considered while designing the system:

Constraints
1. Minimum volume of the compartment to carry letters should be 50 liters.
2. Cost and weight of the systems should be as minimum as possible.
3. In order to have an energy-efficient solution, the power requirements of the system should be as minimum as possible.

You are asked to create a one-two page report stating your assumptions, proposed solution, necessary calculations, and efficiency. Remember your solution should be practically viable and any product/ device which you shall be considering should be clearly mentioned with its necessary specifications.

Note: Also, as for this multiple solutions can be possible The best and most efficient solution will be considered.

Greetings everyone,

As you guys may know NASA created history again by landing the rover Perseverance on Mars and it's quite an engineering spectacle but most of the time things do not go the way we think they would and lead to failures. One has to learn from them by analyzing them and finding their mistakes correcting them and improving upon them for future endeavors. So, in view of this line of thought, we at Yantrik would like to introduce you to the second event organized by us under Utkarsh21'. We are pleased to announce the BrainStorm Challenge.

What is the BrainStorm Challenge?
Basically, you have to do a case study of the failure of space missions due to design errors. You will find the problem statement below.

How to participate?
Form a team of 2 or 3 members and register your team via Google form.

Hi everyone,
Yantrik will be conducting a couple of sessions on the SOLIDWORKS program for designing and simulations. The first session is scheduled for 16 Jan (Saturday) 2000hrs to 2100hrs. (Gmeet Link will be shared soon). Also, our future events would require knowledge of at least 1 CAD software, and also it is a part of an IC course (IC140) so it is recommended that you guys join the session. You can also register "https://my.solidworks.com/try-solidworks" to use the software online although it might lack some features.
About Solidworks: Its a private software and comparatively beginner-friendly but very powerful software. It can be used from designing to simulating various conditions for the workpiece. The provided version is ONLY for windows. Other OS users can try the cloud option (2nd link).
