Major David Manlun from Churachandpur district of Manipur is remembered as one of India’s courageous soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while fighting insurgents near the Myanmar border.
His courage during a dangerous counter-insurgency operation remains an inspiring story of leadership, duty, and commitment to his fellow soldiers.

In June 2017, security forces received intelligence about the presence of armed insurgents in the Lappa area of Nagaland’s Mon district. A joint operation involving security personnel was launched in the difficult terrain close to the international border.

Major David Manlun was leading his troops when they came under fire during the operation. Facing a dangerous situation, he continued to lead from the front and remained focused on protecting and motivating the soldiers under his command.

During the encounter, Major Manlun lost his life in the line of duty. The operation also resulted in weapons and ammunition being recovered, demonstrating the serious nature of the security challenge faced by the forces.

For his exceptional courage, leadership and sacrifice, Major David Manlun was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
