AMU Mallapuram centre: ‘Professor harassing girls’, students stage dharna on campu
A similar complaint was lodged against Faridi last year also but no action was taken against him.
Written by Mohd Faisal Fareed | Lucknow |Published on:November 24, 2015 12:44 am
STUDENTS OF Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Mallapuram centre, in a letter to Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah, have accused a faculty member of harassing girls by entering their hostel without intimation and calling them at odd hours to get information about other girls.
The students are staging a dharna at the administrative block on Mallapuram campus for the last four days demanding action against M H Faridi, an assistant professor in the law department at AMU’s Mallapuram centre. He is also the proctor of the centre.
“Since our demands were not met, we are sitting on a dharna. It is shameful to describe the behaviour of the faculty member towards girls,” a girl student toldThe Indian Express from Mallapuram.
When contacted, Faisal K P, PRO of AMU Mallapuram centre, said: “We have come to know of the demand of the students. Faridi also holds the post of proctor, which has been opposed by the students. Now, Faridi has resigned… his resignation has been accepted and he will not be given any official post.”
AMU’s PRO at Aligarh, Dr Rahat Abrar, claimed that charges against Faridi need to be examined, following which, any step will be taken.
Director of the Mallapuram centre, H Abdul Azeez, has reached out to the students and is currently holding discussion with them to end their agitation.
The letter — signed by over 100 students, including over 50 girls — has alleged that Faridi, despite no official authority, visits the girls’ hostel often without intimation. He also makes girls sit in his chamber for long hours.
At odd hours, he calls up girl students and asks for information about other girls. He had even called up the parents of some girls and given them false information about their activities. Students claimed that already, two girls have left their studies, due to his high handedness.
“We are facing mental trauma. We had informed the authorities in the past too but no one took notice. This has emboldened him. We are fed up with his harassment,” a girl student said.
A similar complaint was lodged against Faridi last year also but no action was taken against him.

Shikwa of Mr. Zameeruddin Shah & Jawab-e-Shikwa of Aligarh Fraternity
Issue No.1: Repayment of debt
MR. ZAMEERUDDIN SHAH:
Let me first clarify that I agreed to serve AMU and resigned from a very prestigious job because I felt I needed to repay the debt my family owes to an institution where generations of my family studied. I did not come to AMU to loot its coffers or build a hereditary "Zamindari" for my children.
ALIGARH FRATERNITY:
The Aligarh Biradari is thankful to Mr. Zameeruddin Shah for accepting to serve AMU and repay the debt of his family. This must have been some very special type of debt which could not have been repaid without becoming the Vice Chancellor. It was precisely for this reason that Mr. Shah, bypassing all norms, actively canvassed for his candidature, stooping very low to become the Vice Chancellor. He is now repaying the debt by:
(i) Living in a fully furnished palatial lodge.
(ii) Using multiple university vehicles separately for himself and his family, including his son Mr. Ali Shah.
(iii) Throwing lavish parties from university funds in the University Guest Houses and VC lodge.
(iv) Not paying even a single paisa towards his electricity bills.
(v) Enjoying frequent family tours within the country and abroad, without spending any money from his pocket and that too without availing any leave.
(vi) Illegally appointing his friends and relatives to various teaching/non-teaching positions without holding any Selection Committees.
He is also repaying his debt by leaving no stone unturned to promote his children and family. The way his daughter got admission to M.Ed. course at AMU is well known to all. On the occasion of Sir Syed Day, he launched a distorted version of AMU Tarana featuring his son, who is in neither a student, alumnus nor a employee of Aligarh Muslim University. Recently, Mr. Shah also appointed a very close relative in the Property Office with a huge salary without holding the selection committee and also gave him five additional increments and spent another 5 lakhs of University money in the renovation of accommodation allotted to him which was exclusively meant for doctors of J. N. Medical College. It seems that AMU has been rechristened as Aligarh “Shahi” University.
Is it repayment of the debt of Mr. Shah’s ancestors or promoting his future generations at the expense of AMU? The Alig Biradari should take lessons from Mr. Shah on how to repay our debt to our Alma Mater

The Malappuram Centre of the Aligarh Muslim University has become the first institution in the country to become a full WiFi campus under the Prime Minister’s ambitious Digital India 2020 Mission. The service was inaugurated by Mr. Iqbal Valiyaveetil, Director of Kerala State Co-operative Housing Federation Ltd, at Sir Syed’s birth anniversary celebration programme.
The installation and launching of WiFi system was completed by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in collaboration with US based company QuadGen, which has put the system in place equipped with modern technology to make it fastest and at par with international standards of connectivity.
Addressing the inaugural function, Mr. A. S. Sukumaran, General Manager of BSNL, Kerala, said the programme had been envisaged and coordinated by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology and the Prime Minister is Chairman of Monitoring Committee on Digital India Programme.
Dr. H. Abdul Azeez, Director, AMU Malappuram Centre, confirmed that the WiFi service will be provided to both students and teachers free of cost. He said that the WiFi installation charges estimated earlier ran for more than Rs. 20 lakh. However, the present launching of this internet connectivity came free of cost under the Prime Minister’s Digital India Programme.
Dr. Azeez said that the facility will now make it possible for Centre’s departments of study to access various online knowledge portals including Inflibnet, Manupatra for Law students and SIRI through a faster bandwidth.
Dr. PA Ibharim Haji, Chairman, PA Group and former member of AMU Court graced the programme as Chief Guest. Prof. A.K. Ramakrishnan, Director, Centre for West Asian Studies, JNU, Prof. K. K. Abid Husain Thangal, Syndicate Member, Calicut University, Dr. Muhammed Swadique, Medical Director, Al-Salama Eye Hospital, Dr. Hashmat Ali and Dr. Mohammad Waseem Khan, Department of Law, AMU were present on the occasion. Dr. Mohd Waseem Ali proposed a vote of thanks.

Farook College was one of the 11 countrywide centres of Aligarh Muslim University’s M.B.B.S and B.D.S Entrance Examination. 3939 candidates appeared for the examination conducted at 6 institutions on the campus. However, it is only lamentably that we came to know the result of the examination being withheld simply because more candidates from Kerala centre, compared with the pass percentage of other states of the country, have qualified the examination. This is purely based on a wrong and prejudiced comparison of Kerala students with those from other states and a blatant disregard of the academic competence of Kerala students. According to the official statistics of the last year, Kerala has put in 60% of the candidates who qualified the CBSE National Entrance Examination and admitted to various medical colleges across the country. The premier institution of medical education, AIMS too is not an exception for Kerala students who make more than 50% of total seats in different AIMSs. Out of 360 medicos of the topmost AIMS, Delhi, 97 (27%) are hailing from Kerala. The admission record of Kerala students for the last five years in Delhi AIMS is 18%, 23.6%, 38.9%, 34.7% and 19.44% respectively. Moreover, of 10 members of its Students’ Union, 9 represent Kerala. In 2014 admission to AIMS, Bhuvanveshar, 41 out 100 were Keralites.
The amazing hike in the number of Keralites from 17 to 57 in the respective years of 2012 and 2013 was on the news and newspapers like Times of India had reported it. Analogous to the present event, AIMS, Delhi also was suspicious of 25 Keralites qualifying the AIMS Entrance Examination four years ago. Consequently, AIMS did not allot examination centre in Kerala the next year, but the history repeated with 28 medicos. It is also to be noticed that the sweeping success in the CBSE Plus Two examination, including the first and second ranks is created again by Keralites who also might have appeared for the Aligar Muslim University Entrance Examination. Farook College is the sole examination centre ever since Kerala was allotted one and usually it is conducted in 6 institutions on the campus. AMU has no examination centres in the neighbouring states like Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Goa. To keep the confidentiality of the examination, no details of the candidates such as the number of candidates, name, place, state are shared with the centre.
Initially, the college was asked to accommodate 3000 students to appear for the test. After a week, it was informed that there will be 4200 students due to the hike in the applicants. A group of ten teachers from the University came to the college on April 25, a day before the examination. They brought with them the sheets containing the details of the applicants, documents to get signed by the students and the stickers with the roll number to be pasted on the desk. Prior to that, no details of the candidates were informed to the centre. The booklets and OMR sheets reached the centre only by the noon and they were received by the representatives of the university. All the documents were kept and locked in the strong room which was also done by the university officials. On the day of examination, the room was opened and the documents were taken out by them. The university sends separate sealed covers for each examination hall and the question booklets are opened only in the respective halls. Rare enough, the photographs of each student holding the hall ticket are also taken. The examination is conducted by the University representatives. The centre only extends all the help required by them.
The move to cancel the test conducted in this centre and to go for the retest only for the applicants from Kerala is a fruit of a wicked design and sheer injustice. A retest would prove the excellence of Keralites once again, if it is conducted for all applicants. It is also demanded that if necessary, there can be three or four centres in Kerala. For many years Farook College has been facilitating the major entrance tests including J.E.E, A.I.P.M.T, A.C.I.R, U.G.C and GATE in a foolproof way and no grievances have been reported so far.
Aligarh Muslim University officials should identify the hidden agenda of the north Indian lobbies to deny opportunities to the students from Kerala and should take immediate measures to ensure justice to the students who have appeared for the exam. They should also take action to restore the image of Farook College which has been the centre of examination, since the scandal will bring disgrace to our college and will tarnish its reputation.
