📡 Special Director General, Dept. of Telecommunications, Govt. of India Visits 5G Lab at SMIT

A high-level delegation comprising the Special Director General (T), Shri Pradip Gupta, ITS, Dy. DG (T), Shri Tarak Nath Das, ITS, and Asst. DG, Shri Utkarsh Verma from the Department of Telecommunications, GoI visited Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology to review the performance of the 5G Lab.

The team was received and the visit coordinated by Prof. Bikash Sharma, HoD (ECE) & Nodal Officer 5G Lab, SMIT and Dr. S. N. Sur and Dr. A. K. Singh, Coordinators, 5G Lab., SMIT.

The visit primarily focused on assessing the progress, research outcomes, and utilization of the 5G lab at SMIT.

The team expressed satisfaction with the advances achieved and appreciated the practical outcomes demonstrated.

They suggested :
✅ Incorporating MSMEs into the lab ecosystem for testing and innovation.
✅ Collaboration with the Government of Sikkim to address real-time regional challenges using 5G-enabled solutions.

A meeting was held in presence of Director i/c, SMIT, Prof. Sangeeta Jha, Associate Director (R), Prof. Chandrashekhar Bhuyan and faculty members of ECE Dept., SMIT.

The meeting deliberated the issues related to the functioning and operation of the equipment, the enhancement and more commercial product-based outcome from the lab were desired.

The Spl. DG expressed his satisfaction at the progress made in the lab and also appreciated the infrastructure and facilities at SMIT.

He showed confidence in the growth of the lab. and the outcomes and assured full support from the DoT for the smooth functioning of the 5G lab at SMIT.

During the session, Prof. Sharma highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in advancing Scientific Research & Development, particularly in the Semiconductor Industry, aligning with India’s vision for technological self-reliance and global leadership in deep-tech innovation.

The workshop served as a powerful platform to discuss how AI-driven research, chip design innovation, and indigenous semiconductor development can accelerate India’s Digital Transformation journey.

🚀 Webinar on VLSI Design – “From RTL to Silicon: World VLSI Design Flow”.

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, in collaboration with the Student Research Forum (SRF), SMIT, SMU, successfully organized an insightful webinar as part of the institutional event calendar.

🎙️ Keynote Speaker: Mr. Nithin Kumar N.R, Senior Assistant Professor, New Horizon College of Engineering, Bengaluru

The session delivered a comprehensive overview of the complete VLSI design flow — from Register Transfer Level (RTL) to final silicon fabrication. Participants explored crucial stages including design entry, simulation, synthesis, physical design, verification, timing analysis, and tape-out.
The webinar provided valuable exposure to industry-standard tools, methodologies, and real-world challenges in modern chip design, benefiting students, researchers, and aspiring semiconductor professionals.

The Alumni Engagement Cell, SMIT, was pleased to welcome Mr. Diamond Sharma, alumnus of B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (2002–2006), back to the SMIT campus. An accomplished entrepreneur, Mr. Sharma is the Founder of Krisys Control Ltd., New Zealand.

During his visit, he interacted with faculty members and students, sharing insights from his global entrepreneurial journey and discussing opportunities at the intersection of engineering, innovation, and leadership. His experiences served as a source of inspiration for aspiring engineers and future innovators.
