Greetings from The Handloom School!

We are delighted to invite you to the Buyer–Seller Meet by The Handloom School (THS), where 12 young artisan-entrepreneurs from 7 handloom clusters across 5 states of India will showcase their work and collections for the first time.

This initiative is part of SBIF LEAP: Empowering Indian Artisans, supported by SBI Foundation and SBI General and implemented by WomenWeave Charitable Trust at The Handloom School.

These students successfully completed the Certificate in Design and Enterprise Management (CDEM) in March 2026. Over the past several months, they have continued to learn, experiment, develop products and strengthen their entrepreneurial journeys.

This Buyer–Seller Meet marks an important milestone in their journey — creating opportunities for artisans to connect with buyers, designers and institutions, build relationships and take their products to new markets.

Meet Mayank and Milan, our youngest student artisans from the Sausar cluster in Madhya Pradesh, a region known for its fine-cotton weaving tradition.

As part of The Handloom School’s Certificate in Design and Enterprise Management, they have been learning to build on their weaving heritage while exploring new possibilities in design, products and enterprise.

Now, they are ready to take their work from the loom to the market — at their first Buyer–Seller Meet.

These young artisan-entrepreneurs completed their Certificate in Design and Enterprise Management (CDEM) in March 2026. After months of learning, experimentation, product development and enterprise building, they are now ready to take their work to the market and connect directly with buyers.

Come take a closer look at our journey to Majuli, Assam — the largest river island in Asia and a truly unique handloom cluster.

Assam, known for its rich weaving traditions and as a major producer of Muga and Eri silk, offered us an incredible opportunity to connect with its weaving community.

For the second time, we partnered with KIRON FOUNDATION to identify and select women weavers for the upcoming CDEM ’26 batch at The Handloom School, with support from SBI Foundation and SBI General Insurance

The Majuli cluster is home to distinctive weaving traditions, including the Jaal technique, used to create the region’s cherished Mekhla Chador and Assamese Gamosa.

From meeting the weavers and witnessing their craft to soaking in the breathtaking views of the mighty Brahmaputra, this visit was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do — connecting traditional knowledge with new skills, opportunities and possibilities for the next generation of handloom communities.

Wrapped up our latest cluster intervention in Nagaland as we begin selecting students for CDEM’26—our residential programme for young weavers, running from November 2026 to February 2027.

This year, we’re excited to welcome an all-women’s batch, with support from the SBI Foundation and SBI General Insurance

Our journey through the districts of Phek and Zunheboto has been inspiring, and we’re especially happy to bring backstrap weaving back into this year’s CDEM collection. There’s so much more to share—stay tuned for our next cluster visit in Assam!

Batch Introduction : Sunita Sethana

Sunita comes from Mandleshwar, a town around 20 kms from Maheshwar everyday. She used to do stitching before joining The Handloom School to learn weaving.
She says she enjoys weaving more than stitching. She also says that the most challenging part about learning to weave is keeping patience with the yarns. Keeping in mind the philosophy of 'one step at a time', she has finally learnt to weave.
