Do you remember the importance of Republic Day taught in school? If not, don't worry, here are some important facts:

1. India adopted Republic Day on 26 Jan 1950
2. The date matched the declaration of Poorna Swaraj on 26 Jan 1930 by Indian National Congress
3. Between 15 Aug 1947 and 26 Jan 1950, India was still a part of British Empire but was independent
4. On 26 Jan 1950, Constitution of India was adopted which replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India
5. President Sukarno of Indonesia was the first chief guest in 1950
6. The first ever parade on Rajpath happened in 1955 with Pakistan's Governor-General Malik Ghulam Mohammad as the chief guest
7. President of India awards Padma Awards to civilians and Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra to soldiers
8. The chief guest at the 2024 parade will be French President Emmanuel Macron
