The Guide: A Capsule Summary
The Guide, written by R.K. Narayan, is a novel that follows the protagonist's journey from guilt to redemption, from greed to selflessness. The story is set in the fictional town of Malgudi, and the narrator is both third person and first person.
Raju's Early Life
The protagonist, Raju, grows up in Malgudi with his parents. His father opens up a shop at the railway station, which leads to the family's fortune. However, Raju's father dies before Raju reaches adulthood, and the responsibility of the shop falls on Raju's shoulders. Raju, however, is not interested in taking care of the shop and instead becomes a fabricated tourist guide.
Raju Meets Rosie
Through his profession, Raju meets an English scholar named Marco Polo, who hires Raju as his guide. Raju lodges Marco and his wife, Rosie, at a place called Peak House on Memphis Hills. Raju instantly becomes enamored by Rosie's beauty and soon learns that Rosie is an Indian classical dancer who is not allowed to dance by her husband, Marco. The two strike up an affair behind Marco's back.
Raju Becomes Rosie's Manager
After a series of events, Rosie appears with all of her luggage at Raju's house, and Raju becomes her manager, organizing her public performances. They shift to a luxurious house where Raju hosts rich men who seek access to Rosie through him. Time passes, and Raju's hunger for wealth increases, leading to back-to-back performances for a tired and weary Rosie.
