Protein Engineering Powers the Future of Nanobodies

Nanobodies, nature's tiny titans in the fight against disease, are poised for even greater impact thanks to the power of protein engineering. These single-domain antibodies, derived from camels and llamas, boast unique advantages over traditional antibodies: they're smaller, more stable, and can access tight spaces within cells. But protein engineering is unlocking their full potential.
Protein engineering allows scientists to tinker with the building blocks of nanobodies, fine-tuning their properties for specific applications. This opens doors for a future filled with possibilities:
• Enhanced Therapeutics: Imagine nanobodies precisely targeting cancer cells or neutralizing viruses with unmatched efficiency. Protein engineering can optimize binding affinity and functionality, leading to more potent treatments.
• Advanced Diagnostics: Nanobodies can be engineered to detect biomarkers for diseases at their earliest stages. Engineering can improve their sensitivity and specificity, making diagnostics faster and more accurate.
• Delivery Revolution: Protein engineering can equip nanobodies with the ability to deliver drugs directly to diseased cells or tissues. This targeted approach could minimize side effects and revolutionize drug delivery.
The latest research published in Nature Communications showcases this exciting future. Scientists used a cell-free platform to rapidly generate SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing nanobodies. This approach highlights the potential for rapid response to emerging pathogens.
Nanobodies, empowered by protein engineering, are poised to transform medicine. Their small size, stability, and now, their engineered potential, promise a future filled with more effective disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Drug-resistant infections more likely to strike women, says WHO:

More countries must recognize how gender affects exposure to pathogens, finds a review by the World Health Organization.

Women might be more likely to develop drug-resistant infections than men — an under-recognized aspect of the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, according to a global review led by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report finds that more than 70% of countries do not recognize gender inequalities in national plans to tackle drug-resistant infections.
And last month, the WHO added four pathogens to its list of the drug-resistant bacteria it considers to be most dangerous to humans. The list, first published in 2017, helps nations to shape their action plans against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics that leads to bacteria becoming resistant to the medications through mutations in their DNA.
The changes to the list were based on how commonly the bacteria cause infections, their deadliness and how easily infections can be prevented through measures such as hand washing, quarantine and vaccination. The WHO added three streptococcal bacteria — which cause conditions including a type of pneumonia and an influenza-like infection that can be fatal in extreme cases — and a highly resistant variety of tuberculosis (see ‘Dangerous drug resistance’). The streptococci are linked to a high burden of disease, especially in poor countries, and the tuberculosis strain is difficult to detect and very expensive to treat.

Concluding a productive and successful week of hands on training.Taking place from October 3rd to October 6th, the Valedictory session of our GCMS and AAS training program, meticulously organized by the Advanced Research Centre, USTM, has proven to be an immensely enriching educational endeavor. We were delighted to host a cohort of 40 participants hailing from distinguished institution namely Tezpur University, Assam University, Bodoland University, Nagaland University, Assam Don Bosco University, as well as participants from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya.

A Proud Moment for India! 🇮🇳

Congratulations to ISRO and the brilliant scientists behind it for achieving another incredible milestone! 🎉

ISRO has successfully launched India's maiden solar mission, Aditya-L1, from Sriharikota today. 🛰️

Aditya-L1 is a groundbreaking space-based observatory designed to study the Sun like never before. It was launched using ISRO's reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at 11.50 am. 🚀

Over the next 125 days, this spacecraft will embark on a journey of approximately 1.5 million km from Earth to reach a Halo orbit around the Lagrangian point L1, which is the closest point to the Sun. ☀️

The Aditya-L1 mission holds several key objectives, including:
🌟 Understanding Coronal Heating and Solar Wind Acceleration
🌟 Studying the initiation of Coronal Mass Ejections
🌟 Monitoring near-earth space weather
🌟 Analyzing the distribution of solar wind

To accomplish these goals, the mission is equipped with seven scientific payloads. 📡

This remarkable achievement is yet another testament to India's prowess in space exploration. Let's take pride in this moment and applaud the dedication and brilliance of our scientists at ISRO! 🙌👨‍🔬👩‍🔬
