The Mann tribe, also known as Tai Mann, are a small ethnic group primarily found in Assam and Meghalaya, India. In Meghalaya, they are primarily located in the West Garo Hills district. Historically, they came to India as soldiers from Myanmar and settled in the region after serving in the army. Over time, they adopted Assamese as their language and integrated with other communities.

In Garo Hills, they are found in villages like Bangalkata, Deldella, Shyamnagar, Haldibari, Shankarpara, and Ranjanggola.

Sadhana Nanda Bhikkhu writes:
I went to the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya to visit the Mann Buddhist community with Pia Sashan Bhante.
The Mann Buddhists are a small community, with their total population in both Meghalaya and Assam not exceeding three thousand.
There are four Buddhist monasteries (viharas) in the West Garo Hills.
The Mann Buddhists are very simple and humble people.
They have a rich and significant history, though it is gradually being lost.
For thousands of years, they have upheld and preserved the Buddhist faith.
Their food is clean, hygienic, and very tasty.

This was my first time visiting a Mann Buddhist village.
Historically, the Mann Buddhists were known as righteous warriors.
Traveling to their village from Guwahati city by private car takes about five hours.
It is also possible to travel there by bus from Guwahati.

I noticed that the Mann Buddhists follow the cultural traditions of the Shyam, Turung, and Aiton Buddhist communities of Assam.
In the West Garo Hills, Buddhist monks rarely visit the Mann villages.
When religious or cultural events take place, they usually invite monks (bhantes) from Guwahati or other places.

Even though we are Buddhist monks, we have failed in the work of spreading and promoting the Dhamma.
Nowadays, in our generation, we have become lazy—we stay in one place. But the Buddha said:

“Charatha bhikkhave cārikā bahujana hitāya bahujana sukhāya…”
(“Go forth, O monks, for the welfare and happiness of the many…”)

Are we truly following the Buddha’s words?

Even at his 70s, our most beloved and most respected VENERABLE BIMAL BHANTE visits the underprivileged children and people to bring hopes of educational and social development. His tireless religious and social services throughout his entire life is incomparable to any Buddhist monk born among the Chakma community in the past or present.

Always grateful and thankful to Bhante for his unconditional dedication and sacrifice for all of us. May you live a healthy life and inspire us spreading engaged Buddhism with social and spiritual services! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻☸️☸️☸️🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

On July 13, 2024, generous devotees from Malaysia supported the flood-affected families in Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh. Buddhist monks, who serve as spiritual teachers, also play a significant role in providing relief, expressing gratitude to those who have supported them throughout their lives.

Devotees and monastics should walk together on the path, helping each other in times of need. When lay devotees suffer, monks should not remain idle, and vice versa. Every year in Arunachal Pradesh, floods affect hundreds of families, with Chakma Buddhists often being the worst affected. Despite living in the state for over 6 decades , they still lack basic rights, including identity documentation, education, voting, residence, and employment, making them particularly vulnerable.

We must remember the Buddha's teachings on compassion and kindness. Let the affected people feel the warmth of the Triple Gems and their fellow Buddhist brothers and sisters. Even in times of misery, they should not forget the Buddha’s compassionate teachings, which can strengthen their devotion and affection.

Distributed in villages:
1) Japani dwip, Henge Hoja Adam, Jhumoro Adam, Pallakana Adam, Jhallepur Adam, Panbari Adama, Huluksuri, Biyej Chora under Dharmapur Circle.

2) Under Bijaypur Circle: Anguhoja Adam, Dhameigoja Adama, Borbo Hoja Adam, Hala Chokke Adam, Cher Ali Adam, Ugolchori Adam, Bet Kem, Tin Ali, Mereye Adam, Shamuksuri, Sornarthu Adam.
3) Ratbapur, Gulokour,
4) Mododwip

More than 800 families received 20 kg rice per family.
