Learning beyond the classroom, building towards a sustainable future. 🌱

The Centre for Multi-Faceted Learning (CML), Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, in collaboration with CSIR-CMERI, successfully concluded two Student Development Programmes (SDPs) on Waste Management for the third-year students of the Civil Engineering Department.

The programmes were conducted on 4th–5th August and 6th–7th August, providing students with valuable insights into waste management, sustainable practices, and their relevance to the field of engineering.

We were honoured to have Dr. Krishnendu Kundu, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CMERI, as the coordinator of both SDPs and as the Chief Guest for the certificate distribution ceremony. His expertise and guidance added immense value to the learning experience.

The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participating students, recognising their enthusiasm, participation, and commitment to learning,in presence of Prof Dr Amanpreet Kaur Sodhi, coordinator CML, Er Lakhvir Singh office incharge, Prof Dr Jagbir Singh HOD Civil Engineering. # # # Harnessing AI for BIS Quality & Standards | GNDEC

**Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC), Ludhiana** successfully organised an engaging and innovative **BIS Awareness & AI Competition** on the theme **“Harnessing AI for BIS Quality & Standards”**, under the **BIS Chapter**, organised by the **Departments of CSE, Information Technology and Computer Applications**.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from **more than 60 students**, providing them with an opportunity to understand how **Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)** can contribute to quality, safety, reliability and innovation in the IT and computing ecosystem.

The event commenced with an **expert talk by Dr. Amit Kamra, BIS Chapter Faculty Coordinator**, on the **“Importance of BIS in IT and Industry.”** Dr. Kamra further elaborated on **“How BIS is Going to Impact the Field of Computer Science & IT”**, explaining the significance of standards through practical examples and real-life case studies.

This was followed by an exciting **problem-solving competition**, where students were presented with real-life challenges and asked to develop innovative **IT-based solutions incorporating BIS standards**. The activity encouraged students to combine their technical knowledge, creativity, problem-solving skills and understanding of standardisation.

The winners and outstanding performers were **felicitated by Dr. K S Mann, Head, Department of Information Technology**, in the presence of **Mr. Hrithik Thakur, BIS Officer and Dr. Vivek Thapar.

The competition was judged by **Dr. Sachin Bagga and Prof. Jaswant Taur **, whose evaluation helped recognise the students' innovative approaches and effective integration of BIS standards with technology-driven solutions.

The event successfully highlighted the message:

# # # **Inspiring Words by Er. Gurbir Singh Brar | Campus Connect @ 2026 – Day 2**

The Chief Guest on Day 2 of Campus Connect @ 2026, Er. Gurbir Singh Brar, an esteemed alumnus of the **1989–1993 Mechanical Engineering batch**, joined the programme along with his wife, **Mrs. Gagandeep Kaur**, and their son and daughter. Travelling all the way from **Faridkot**, the family’s presence added a special warmth and emotional connection to the occasion.

In his motivating address, Er. Brar emphasised the importance of **all-round development**, encouraging students to look beyond academics and technical knowledge and focus equally on **communication skills, personality development, discipline, good values, confidence and emerging trends in AI.

He advised the students to remain disciplined, develop a habit of **continuous learning**, respect their parents and teachers, and make conscious efforts to become better individuals every day. He reminded them that true success is not measured only by academic achievements or career growth, but also by **character, conduct, values and the positive impact they create in society**.

He encouraged the students to **set clear goals in life, dream big and work with dedication and perseverance** to transform their aspirations into reality. He emphasised the importance of becoming responsible citizens and contributing meaningfully towards the **nation and society**.

As a special and memorable moment, Brigadier P. S. Cheema administered the **Champion Oath** to the students, inspiring them to uphold the spirit of excellence, integrity, commitment and leadership.
