š§© 10 Things We Should NOT Do When Addressing Behavior in Children with Autism š§©
As educators, parents, and caregivers, we all want to support our children better. But sometimes, our responses to behaviorsāespecially in children with autismācan unintentionally make things harder for them and for us.
Here are 10 things Iām reminding myself NOT to do when working on behavior changes:
1ļøā£ Do NOT focus only on negative behavior.
Instead, recognize and celebrate the positive moments, no matter how small.
2ļøā£ Do NOT overlook the child's triggers.
Every behavior has a reasonālet's get curious instead of reactive.
3ļøā£ Do NOT give multiple or unclear instructions.
Simplicity = clarity. One step at a time makes a big difference.
4ļøā£ Do NOT overuse negative instructions like ādonātā or āstop.ā
Teach what to do, not just what not to do.
5ļøā£ Do NOT assume the child understands the consequences.
Help them connect their actions to outcomes in gentle, concrete ways.
6ļøā£ Do NOT ignore the power of positive reinforcement.
A little praise can go a long way in shaping behavior.
7ļøā£ Do NOT treat every situation as a battle.
Pick your battles. Sometimes flexibility is the key to peace.
8ļøā£ Do NOT lose sight of your real goal.
Itās not about obedienceāitās about growth, independence, and emotional safety.
9ļøā£ Do NOT overlook the importance of connection.
Trust and bonding are the foundation for all learning and behavior change.
š Do NOT forget that thereās no one-size-fits-all strategy.
Every child is different. What works for one may not work for anotherāand thatās okay.
Letās shift our focus from control to connection, and from correction to compassion. š
