IELTS GENERAL TRAINING ESSAY (SEPTEMBER 29)

Some people think that TV advertisements serve a useful function for TV viewers and others don’t agree. What is your opinion?

One school of thought asserts that television endorsements are beneficial for an audience while the other school of thought thinks otherwise. I believe advertisements are important for the viewers, but it primarily depends upon the purpose and credibility of the matter being telecasted. This essay will elucidate how advertisement constituting significant and authentic information plays a crucial role among people while its countertype is a mere wastage, in the subsequent paragraphs.

On the one hand, advertisements that are in public interest and do not spread misleading ideas and dubious expectations among the viewers are of paramount importance. This can be understood by their inspirational and educative content. Mostly, such endorsements are projected to make people aware of various crucial events. As evidenced in the case of the World Health Organization initiated Make India Polio Free campaign, an extensive bulletin was launched especially to target the vast population of rural India. Timely advertisements regarding the vaccination used to be shown on television, which brought a lot of positive change. From this point of view, the importance of television advertisements cannot be overlooked.

On the other hand, there are certain endorsements, the prime aim of which is to earn profit through reckless consumerism by misguiding people. In other words, they appear highly attractive and alluring; however, they are delusional and far from what they promise. This gravitates audience towards buying things which they do not even require. Take the case of commercials that project certain cosmetics that guarantee fairness. They not only portray a superficial mindset towards the physical appearance of people but also turn out to be irrational when expectations are not met. As a matter of fact, in such cases, advertisements of this nature are redundant.

The above discussion clarifies while the television promotion related to critical happenings is essential, the one which projects misleading facts and figures is unnecessary. It is hoped that viewers make their choices wisely and make rational decisions based on their exposure.

Herein, I will discuss some of the reasons why (rephrase the topic sentence) and some of the challenges to be overcome.
Let’s begin by looking at the advantage of (topic sentence). One of the main positives of (Write first advantage here). What I mean by this is that (explain the advantage further). For instance, (give an example related to the advantage). This can make you (conclude the advantage).
Turning to the other side of the argument, (Write first disadvantage in the sentence). To be more precise, (Write some more sentences about the first disadvantage). Let’s use (write what your example is about) as an example. This often leads to (write a concluding sentence about the disadvantage).
All things considered, (Write a general one sentence summary of the topic). You need to weigh up the pros of (write two advantages here which you wrote in the second and third paragraph), and the cons of (write two advantages here which you wrote in the fourth and fifth paragraph). Personally, I believe the benefits in terms of (write the same to advantage in different words) eventually over-weighs the negatives.

Today's Academic IELTS essay question

The restoration of old buildings in major cities around the world involves a lot of government expenditures. This money should be used in new housing and road development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

A general observation entails a huge expenditure of public money on restoring old buildings in various metropolitans around the world. Accordingly, it is felt that this fortune should be deployed in constructing new accommodations and developing roadways. I fractionally agree with this idea as the refurbishment of old establishments is also important in several cases. This essay will verify this bi-directional standpoint in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, investing government funding in building new houses and road maintenance is crucial as it aids in sustaining the ever-growing crowd of the major cities. Put differently, the requirement of accommodating the people is of paramount importance, which also needs to be supplemented by an efficient road network. This makes it an issue of not only a major concern but also high priority. As evidenced in the case of one of the world’s largest cities, Shanghai, the Chinese government has strategically planned the budget for the construction of skyscrapers meant to provide a dwelling for a large proportion of its populace. Since the city is also a giant industrial hub, its extensive road system is famous globally. From this point of view, this approach with regard to the allocation of public funds is justifiable.

On the contrary, the old buildings also require considerable attention of the authorities especially in the case of historical and cultural significance. This can be comprehended from their role in demonstrating the uniqueness of a country’s heritage and tradition. Such buildings need to be maintained under a timely vigilance to check any deterioration. Take the case of Athens, the city is endowed with an immensely rich history and its old buildings form an important part in attracting the international tourists. The government of Greece lays special emphasis on the maintenance of all these iconic structures thereby ensuring the ethnicity of the place. As a matter of fact, restoration of old buildings cannot be entirely overlooked.

Ultimately, the one-sided spending of government money on either maintaining old establishments or creating new ones is not a practical approach. It has been categorically analysed that both aspects are important for any city and its people and culture. It is anticipated that governments of various countries strike a balance in such situation of dilemma and ensure a win-win scenario.
