Your IELTS idea isn’t bad. Your example might be. πŸ‘€

A common problem in IELTS Writing Task 2 is giving examples that are simply too general.

For example:

❌ β€œMany people use social media.”

But… so what?

The examiner needs to see how your example actually supports your main idea.

Try this instead:

βœ… β€œFor example, university students can use LinkedIn to build professional networks and find internship opportunities.”

Now it's specific:

WHO? β†’ University students
WHAT? β†’ LinkedIn
WHY? β†’ Networking + internships

That's much more useful for developing your argument.

So remember:

❌ Don't give a random example.
βœ… Make it specific.
βœ… Connect it directly to your main idea.

For IELTS Band 7+, don't just write an example to fill space.

Make it relevant, specific and connected to your argument.

IDEA β†’ EXAMPLE β†’ EXPLANATION

🚨 One-word answers could be holding your IELTS Speaking score back.

Examiner: β€œDo you enjoy reading?”
❌ β€œYes.”

That’s not wrongβ€”but it gives you almost nothing to assess.

Instead, try this simple structure:

Opinion β†’ Reason β†’ Example

βœ… β€œYes, I really enjoy reading because it helps me relax. For example, I often read mystery novels before bed.”

You don't need to speak for 2 minutes in every answer. You need to develop your ideas naturally.

Stuck at Band 6 in IELTS Writing? Your topic sentence might be the problem. πŸ‘€

And no, I’m not talking about grammar.

A sentence can be 100% grammatically correct and still be too vague for IELTS Task 2.

For example:

❌ There are several reasons why this is beneficial.

The grammar is fine. But what exactly is the paragraph about?

Now compare it with:

βœ… One major benefit of public transport is that it can reduce traffic congestion.

Much clearer.

The examiner immediately knows what the main idea of the paragraph is.

Remember this for your next essay:

❌ Vague topic sentence
βœ… Clear + specific topic sentence

You don't need fancy English to get Band 7.

You need clear English that directly shows your main idea.

Stuck at IELTS Writing Band 6?

One common problem is a weak IELTS Writing Task 2 introduction.

❌ Band 6 approach: Restate the question + β€œThis essay will discuss both views.”

βœ… Band 7+ approach: Restate the topic + clearly state your position.

The examiner should understand your opinion immediately.

IELTS Writing rule:
Don’t just restate the question. State your position.

Before your next IELTS mock test, check your introduction:

πŸ‘‰ Is my position clear?
πŸ‘‰ Can the examiner immediately understand my opinion?
