Parametric vs. Non-Parametric Tests: Choosing the Right Tool for Data Analysis
In statistical analysis, the accuracy of your conclusions depends on choosing the right test. The decision largely depends on how your data behaves and how it is measured.
🔹 Parametric Tests
Used when your data meets certain statistical assumptions.
Examples: t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, Regression.
When to use:
• Data is continuous (interval/ratio).
• Data follows a normal distribution.
• Groups have equal variance.
• Observations are independent.
Why use:
✔ More statistical power
✔ Allows estimation of population parameters
🔹 Non-Parametric Tests
Used when data does not meet parametric assumptions or when dealing with ordinal or categorical variables.
Examples: Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman’s rho, Chi-square.
When to use:
• Data is skewed, non-normal, or has outliers
• Sample size is small
• Variables are ordinal or nominal
Why use:
✔ Fewer assumptions
✔ Robust for messy or non-normal data
Key Insight
Choose the test based on your data, not convenience:
• If the dataset is normal and continuous → Parametric
• If not → Non-parametric
Strong statistical choices lead to stronger insights, better decisions, and more credible research.
