Presenting Mr. Sameer Soni - hear him at Samvit 2019

Journey:
Sameer started his career in banking with Deutsche Bank in the year 1993. He moved into non-traditional business areas especially New Media beginning with a TV “Etc Channel “in the Mid 90’s when Private TV Channels were breaking ground in India. He was part of 7 members to drive Times of India’s historic entry into the FM Radio space through Radio Mirchi; this venture was the group’s first high-value non-traditional business at the time with overseas investment. Today Radio Mirchi is amongst the leading FM Channels in the country with a Total of 51 stations across 46 cities. Sameer briefly engaged with the Digital Business of Times of India Group where he worked as business head of Indiatimes.com. At the same time, he was also responsible to manage Bollywood revenues for the group which he successfully grew multifold on the traditional advertising business.
He also managed the Groups flagship IP’s Filmfare Awards and Femina Miss India; also managing the franchise for Miss World and Miss Universe during this period. The management was keen to utilize his understanding of Bollywood Business and leverage the same for growing the group Revenue from the sector in non-traditional areas. Thus, came the crucial assignment of Medianet. Launched six years prior to Sameer taking over as Business Head, this venture was skirting growth not realizing its optimum potential -the important sector i.e. the Bollywood entertainment industry had kept away from Medianet and had not rooted at a national scale. Sameer was responsible for devising various strategic approaches to Onboard the Bollywood industry and grow the business Nationally. In a span of fewer than 28 months, he had managed to grow the business from INR 40 Crores- INR 230 Crores. The team size grew from a headcount of 78 to 185 and the number of operating locations grew from 7 to 17. Sameer was then assigned the mandate to take the group’s operations overseas thus launching the overseas IP: Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) in British Columbia in April 2013. He received accolades for managing relations with the Government of British Columbia and fulfilling aspirations of Bollywood Fans in the Canadian Province. He continues to discover new international areas of business outside the country launching the international office in Dubai and working on China currently seeking partnerships for the group across continents. He spends roughly 10 days of the year in India.

Presenting our first speaker for Samvit 2019

Dr Isher Judge Ahluwalia, an eminent Indian economist, is Chairperson of Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), a leading think-tank based in New Delhi engaged in policy-oriented research. She was Chairperson of the High Powered Expert Committee on Urban Infrastructure and Services, the Government of India, from 2008 to 2011. She was awarded Padma Bhushan by the President of India in the year 2009 for her services in the field of education and literature.

Dr. Ahluwalia’s research has focussed on policy-oriented challenges facing the Indian economy in the areas of urbanisation, sustainable public service delivery, macroeconomic issues, and industrial growth and productivity. Dr Ahluwalia has written a number of books, the latest being “Transforming Our Cities: Postcards of Change” (Harper Collins, 2014), and a volume co-edited with Ravi Kanbur and P K Mohanty, titled “Urbanisation in India: Challenges, Opportunities and the Way Forward” (Sage India, 2014). She is also the co-editor together with Prof. IMD Little of “India’s Economic Reforms and Development: Essays for Manmohan Singh” (OUP, 2013), which is an updated version of the original volume published in 1998.

Dr Ahluwalia was Chairperson, Board of Trustees of International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington D.C., from 2003 to 2006 and was on the Board of Trustees of International Water Management Institute (IWMI) from 2010 to 2016. She was a member of the Eminent Persons Group set up by the ADB President Kuroda, which submitted a Report - “Toward a New Asian Development Bank in New Asia” to him.

Dr Ahluwalia received her B.A. (Hons) from Presidency College, Calcutta University, M.A. from the Delhi School of Economics, and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in economics.
