एक बार सभी देवता किसी मुसीबत में पड़ गए थे। सभी देव शिवजी की शरण में गए और अपनी परेशानी बताई। उस समय भगवान शिवजी के साथ गणेश और कार्तिकेय भी वहीं बैठे हुए थे।

देवताओं को परेशान देख शिवजी ने गणेश और कार्तिकेय से पुछा कि इन परेशान देवताओं की मुश्किलें तुम दोनों में से कौन हल कर सकता है और उनकी मदद कौन कर सकता है। जब दोनों भाई मदद करने के लिए तैयार हुए तो शिवजी नें उनके सामने एक प्रतियोगिता रख दी। इस प्रतियोगिता के मुताबिक दोनों भाइयों में जो भी सबसे पहले पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करके लौटेगा, वही देवताओं की मुश्किलों में मदद कर पाएगा।

अपने पिता शिवजी की बातें सुनकर कार्तिकेय अपनी सवारी मोर पर बैठकर पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करने निकल पड़े। लेकिन, गणेशजी वहीं अपनी जगह पर खड़े रहे और सोचने लगे कि वह मूषक की मदद से पूरे पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा कैसे लगा पाएंगे...। इसमें तो बरसों बीत जाएंगे। उसी वक्त उनके मन में एक उपाय सूझा। वे अपने पिता शिवजी और माता पार्वती के नजदीक आए और उनकी सात बार परिक्रमा करके वापस अपनी जगह पर खड़े हो गए।

कुछ समय बाद जब कार्तिकेय पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा पूरी करके लौटे तो स्वयं को विजेता कहने लगे। तभी शिवजी ने गणेशजी की ओर देखा और उनके पूछा कि क्यों गणेशजी तुम क्यों पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करने नहीं गए? इस पर गणेशजी ने तपाक से कहा कि माता-पिता में ही तो पूरा संसार है, चाहे में पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करूं या अपने माता-पिता की, एक ही तो बात है...। यह सुन शिवजी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने गणेश को सभी देवताओं की मुश्किलें दूर करने की आज्ञा दे दी। इसके साथ ही शिवजी ने गणेशजी को यह भी आशीर्वाद दिया कि कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी पर जो भी व्यक्ति तुम्हारी पूजा और व्रत करेगा उसके सभी दुःख दूर हो जाएंगे और उसे सभी सुखों की प्राप्ति होगी।
