Figures of speech (अलंकार)

भाषा में सरलता, नवीनता, माधुर्य एवं सौंदर्य के लिए अलंकारों का प्रयोग किया जाता है। वाक्यों के रूप को अलंकरित करके उनसे दिये जा रहे संदेश के असर को अधिक प्रभावशाली बनाया जाता है. जब वाक्यों के रूप को संशोधित करके अलंकरित करने के लिये Figure of Speech या अलंकार का उपयोग किया जाता है।

Figures of speech are used to amplify simplicity, innovation, melody and beauty of a language. Figure of Speech is said to be in use when the form of an ordinary sentences is changed to increase the effect or impact of the message being delivered.

A Figure of Speech can be applied through a single sentence or through a group of sentences.

जरूरी नहीं है कि Figure of speech या अलंकार का उपयोग एक इक्लौते वाक्य से है. अलंकार का उपयोग अकसर कछ वाक्यों के समूह से भी किया जाता है.

Figure of Speech in use

The example below shows the role that Figures of Speech play in modifying the impact of a sentence.

निम्न उदाहरण में हम देखेंगे कि अलंकार की मदद से केसे एक वाक्य के प्रभाव पर असर पड़ता है.

Normal sentence

साधारण वाक्य

1. He fought bravely.

2. He fought like a lion.

3. He was the lion of the fight.

Each of the three sentence on the right has generally the same meaning, but in each the impact of the message being delivered is different.

तीनों वाक्यों का अर्थ लगभग एक ही है, पर हर एक में जो संदेश दिया जा रहा है उसके प्रभाव में अंतर है.

In the sentences above, sentence 1 is a normal sentence, whereas sentences 2 and 3 both use different figures of speech.

उपर के तीन वाक्यों में से, पहला सामान्य है, जबकी वाक्य 2 और 3 में वाक्य के प्रभाव को निखारने के लिये अनंकार (figures of speech) का उपयोग किया गया है.

The different Figures of Speech have been classified into separate groups depending on the usage.

उनके उपयोग पर आधारित Figures of Speech (अलंकार) को निम्न वर्गों में

1. Resemblance - समानता

2. Contrast - असमानता

3. Association - संसर्ग

4. Construction - रचना

1. Resemblance - समानता
The figures of speech under this category show similarity or resemblance.

इस श्रेणी के अंतर्गत आने वाले अलंकार से समानता का ऐहसास होता है.

Simile (उपमा)

यह अलंकार दो भिन्न प्रकार की वस्तुओं की तुलना करता है जिनमें कम से कम एक गुण समान हो । सिमिली (उपमा) में अलग-अलग ऐसी चीज़ों की तुलना की जाती है जिसमें बहुत कम समानताएं होती हैं। as, so या like शब्दों का प्रयोग समानता व्यक्त करने के लिए होता है ।

This compares two objects of different kinds which have at least one point in common. Simile compares different type of things that have very little in common. The words as, so, or like are used for showing common.

Example:

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven.

I see the waves upon the shore, Like light dissolved in star-showers thrown.

Till death like sleep might steal on me.

And we are here as on a darkling plain, Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight.

She sways like a flower in the wind of our song.

He fought like a lion.

He looked big as an elephant.

Even in times of trouble, he was cool as a cucumber.

Note : यदि तुलना एक ही जाति की दो वस्तुओं में हो तो वो Simile नहीं बल्कि Comparison होगा।

If two objects are of same kinds then it will be Comparison, not Simile.

Example :

She is as beautiful as her sister.
यहाँ पर she और her sister एक ही जाति के है इसलिए यह केवल तुलना है , न की उपमा अलंकार ।

Here she and her sister are of same kinds that's why it is only Comparison, not Simile.



Metaphor (रूपक)

जहाँ उपमा अलग-अलग वस्तुओं में समानता दिखाता है वहीं मेटाफर (रूपक) मानता है कि दोनों वस्तु एक ही हैं । इसमें तुलना की जाने वाली बातों को एक मान लिया जाता है तथा तुलना करने वाले शब्द as, so या like का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है ।

Where simile compares the different type items, a metaphor simply assumes that both items are the same. In Metaphor, the things compared are treated as one and the same and the words of comparison as, like or so are not used.

"A Metaphor is an implied Simile, It does not, like Simile, state that one thing is like another or acts as another, but takes that for granted as if the two things were one" - Wren and Martin

Examples :

Books are the mirrors of the soul.

I'm a little pencil in the hand of a writing God, who is sending a love letter to the world.

People say that eyes are windows to the soul.

She's the kind of girl who climbed the ladder of success wrong by wrong.

Hope is the crystal m**h of emotions. It hooks you fast and kills you hard.

The world is a stage.

He was the lion of the fight.

Life is a dream.



Personification (मानवीयकरण)

कई बार ऐसे अलंकार का उप्योग किया जाता है जिस से ऐसा प्रतीत हो कि कोई अजीवित या कालपनिक चिज़ जीवित और बुधिमान है. इस प्रकार के अलंकार को अंग्रजी में परसॉनिफिकेशन और हिंदी में मानविकरण कहते हैं. इससे ऐसा लगता है कि यह अलंकृत वस्तु या विचार अपने आप से कुछ कर रहा है । इसमें निर्जीव वस्तुओं तथा भावों को सजीव मानकर व्यक्ति के रूप में वर्णन करते है ।

Personification is the figure of speech in use when we refer to some non-living things or abstract ideas are referred to as if they have life and intelligence. It seems that the object or concept is doing som**hing on its own. In Personification, lifeless objects and abstract ideas are thought of as persons having life or where representing a non-human thing as human.

Examples :

The coins were completely unprepared for this and were sadly deceived by their own inertia.

Know the grave doth gape for thee thrice wider than for other men.

Anxiety is sitting on her face.

A lie has no legs.

Jealousy is a green-eyed monster.

Love is blind.

Opportunity knocks at the door but once.

But Patience, to prevent that murmur soon replies.

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection.

Death followed when the city was struck by plague.

Dreams generally come when you sleep.
Apostrophe (सम्बोधन)

Apostrophe (सम्बोधन) में उपयोग करने वाला सीधे किसी मृत, गैर-मौजूद या ऐसे वस्तु या विचार को सीधे सम्बोधित करता है । इस अलंकार में मृत, अनुपस्थित या मानवीकरण किये हुए पदार्थ या विचार को सम्बोधित किया जाता है ।

Under the figure of speech Apostrophe the speaker directly addresses or talks to som**hing that is dead, not present or to a personified object or idea. Apostrophe is a special form of personification. An Apostrophe is a direct address to the dead, to the absent or to a personified object or idea.

सम्बोधन में किसी निर्जीव वस्तु को सजीव मानकर उसे सम्बोधित भी करते हैं तथा सम्बोधन का चिन्ह (!) भी लगाते हैं । कभी कभी किसी सम्बोधन Noun के बाद अल्प विराम (,) भी लगाते हैं ।

Examples:

O Sweet Content ! Where is they mild abode ?

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue ocean roll !

O sweet companions, loved with love intense, For your sakes shall the tree be ever dear.

Oh ! What a noble mind is here overthrown.

O Liberty, liberty ! What crimes are, Committed in thy name.

O Death ! Come soon.

O Grave ! Where is thy victory ?

O Heavy Lightness ! Serious vanit

O Friend! Why have you left me alone in this place?

O Freedom! I need you so that I may fly free in the open sky

Parts of Speech
(शब्द भेद)



Group of words are used together in a specific manner to write or speak a sentence. Every single word in a sentence is given a name i.e. Noun, Pronoun, Verb etc. To understand the sequence of words so that the sentence delivers the correct message, these words are categorized in 8 categories, which are called the “Parts of Speech”.

किसी भी वाक्य को लिखने व बोलने के लिए शब्दों के समूह का प्रयोग किया जाता है। वाक्य में प्रयोग इन सभी शब्दों को कोई न कोई नाम दिया जाता है। जैसे - संज्ञा, सर्वनाम, क्रिया आदि। शब्दों के सही प्रयोग को समझने के लिए ही इन्हें 8 वर्गों में बाँटा गया है जिन्हें शब्द भेद कहते हैं।



8 Parts of speech with their one-liner definitions are:



1. Noun (संज्ञा)
किसी भी प्राणी, जगह या वस्तु के नाम को संज्ञा कहते हैं।

2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम)
सर्वनाम का प्रयोग संज्ञा की जगह पर किया जाता है।

3. Verb (क्रिया)
क्रिया वो है जिसके माध्यम से Subject के कार्य या अवस्था (स्थिति) की जानकारी मिलती है।

4. Adjective (विशेषण)
जो किसी संज्ञा या सर्वनाम की विशेषता बताते हैं या उनके बारे में कुछ अतिरिक्त सूचना देते हैं।

5. Adverb (क्रिया विशेषण)
जो किसी क्रिया की, किसी विशेषण की या किसी दूसरे क्रिया विशे षण की विशेषता बताते हैं या उनके बारे में कुछ अतिरिक्त सूचना देते हैं।

6. Preposition (सम्बन्ध सूचक अव्वय या पूर्वसर्ग)
Prepositions वो शब्द होते हैं जो किसी संज्ञा या सर्वनाम और वाक्य के दूसरे भाग के बीच के संबंध को दर्शाते हैं।

7.Conjunction (संयोजक)
यह दो शब्दों या वाक्यों को जोड़ देते हैं। इससे वाक्य छोटा हो जाता हैबिना अर्थ बदले।

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक)
भावनाओं की अभिव्यक्ति करने वाले शब्द व शब्दों के समूह।
Example:



Noun (संज्ञा)

Success is very important.
सफलता बहुत ज़रुरी है।

Ram is my friend
राम मेरा दोस्त है।



Pronoun (सर्वनाम)

Ram was with me.
राम मेरे साथ था।

Dad scolded me.
पापा ने मुझे डाँटा।



Verb (क्रिया)

Ayansh is sleeping.
अयाँश सो रहा है।

Ayansh is 8 months old.
अयाँश 8 महीने का है।



Adjective (विशेषण)

Ram is brave.
राम बहादुर है

He is Ram who is older than I.
वो राम है जो मुझसे बड़ा है
Adverb (क्रिया विशेषण)

Ram runs fast.
राम तेज दौड़ता है

I study till late.
मैं देर तक पढ़ता हूँ



Preposition (सम्बन्ध सूचक अव्वय या पूर्वसर्ग)

I am coming from Delhi.
मैं दिल्ली से आ रहा हूँ।

Ram depends on you.
राम तुम पर निर्भर है।



Conjunction (संयोजक)

Ram and Shyam are good friends.
राम और श्याम अच्छे दोस्त हैं।

You may take this book or that book.
आप ये या वो किताब ले सकते हैं।



Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक)

Congratulations!
बधाई हो!

Thank God!
भगवान का शुक्र है!

No illness must be taken lightly. 15 days is more than enough. 5-7 days period is acceptable. Anyways, now you at least made out that the headache occurs at the same time before going to bed.

Not really but time is killed with family members. My sister’s little baby is there too. I play with her/him, time just flies.

Actually sir, yesterday some relatives had dropped in so I got so busy into cooking food that I couldn’t spare time. I thought, I would do at night but they stayed even at night so it got difficult to manage.
