✨ A truly moving French Gapshap moment ✨
Last Saturday, November 29th, the Alliance Française of Lucknow had the immense pleasure of welcoming writer and poet Monia Aljalis, currently in residence at the Alice B***r Institute, Varanasi, as part of the Villa Swagatam artistic residency program.
Through a powerful poetic workshop on freedom, transgression and confinement, emotions flowed freely. The most touching moment came at the end, when participants courageously recited their own poems, sharing their voices with the group.
A beautiful, intimate, inspiring exchange and a wonderful reminder of what the French Gapshap community is all about: connection, expression and shared emotions.
Thank you to everyone who made this moment so special 💙

It was a great pleasure to visit the Alice B***r Institute in Varanasi. I was most kindly received by Mr. Anoop Kumar Sharma, the Secretary of the Institute, whose hospitality and deep knowledge of the place’s artistic heritage made the visit truly enriching.
This remarkable institution — once the home of Swiss artist and Indologist Alice B***r, who devoted her life to studying the aesthetic principles of Indian art — continues today to foster dialogue between India and the world.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet Monia Aljalis, a French author and poet currently in artistic residency at the Institute as part of the Villa Swagatam programme, an initiative of the French Institute in India and the Ministry of Culture (Government of India).
The Villa Swagatam residencies embody the spirit of cultural reciprocity: they invite artists from France to immerse themselves in the living heritage of India, creating new bridges between creative worlds, languages, and sensitivities.
In a city like Varanasi where art, devotion, and philosophy coexist in every street, such encounters take on a special resonance. They remind us that culture is not only about preserving traditions, but about continuing the dialogue between souls, centuries, and civilizations.

The links between the Alliance Française de Lucknow and Banaras Hindu University - Varanasi are strengthening even further !
Yesterday, our Director Nicolas Macé had the pleasure of visiting the Department of French Studies at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), one of India’s most prestigious centres of learning.
His visit aimed to strengthen the bridge between BHU and our institution, exploring how together we can inspire young minds through the French language and culture.
He was warmly welcomed by Prof. Prayaas Chaturvedi, Head of the Department of French Studies, as well as Prof. Vasumathi Badrinathan, Prof. Akhilesh Kumar, and Dr. Gitanjali Singh . Our conversations touched upon pedagogy, intercultural dialogue, and the role of French studies in today’s plural India.
AF Lucknow looks forward to building meaningful collaborations between the Alliance Française de Lucknow and Banaras Hindu University in the service of education, dialogue, and cultural understanding. It's off to a good start, as BHU students will be joining the French Gapshap community we created in Lucknow. A French Gapshap project specifically for Varanasi is therefore under consideration!
