Is your Google account compromised? Here's what you should do..

Data breaches have become a major threat in today's digitally connected world. The biggest concern around these leaks is how hackers are putting the leaked data on the dark web.

If you want to be sure that password of your Google account was never compromised, you can install Google's free Password Checkup tool as an add-on extension in the Chrome browser. The tool runs in the background and checks login details that you have used on various platforms. If your passwords or usernames match Google's database of more than 4 billion compromised credentials, the software will flag them. The extension pops up an alert on your screen that reads, "Password Checkup detected that your password for [website] is no longer safe due to a data breach. You should change your password now."

If any new data breach occurs, this tool will notify if your password was comprised. It also gives a small list of exposed accounts, prompting you to change your password. All the information stored by the tool is encrypted. Google has clarified that the company has no way to access the data.

In an official statement, Google said, "We built Password Checkup so that no one, including Google, can learn your account details. Password Checkup was built with privacy in mind. It never reports any identifying information about your accounts, passwords or device."

Some of the most commonly used passwords that are easy to hack include- 123456, PASSWORD, 123456789, 12345678, 12345, 111111, 1234567, SUNSHINE, QWERTY, ILOVEYOU, PRINCESS, ADMIN, WELCOME, 666666, ABC123, FOOTBALL, 123123, MONKEY, 654321, !@ #$%^&*, CHARLIE, AA123456, DONALD, PASSWORD1, QWERTY123.

If you use a simple password that has been used by many, your credentials might get flagged off by the extension. Even if that happens it is good to change your password. Hackers usually buy a database of vulnerable or compromised passwords from various sites. These passwords are then routinely attempted by the hackers to hijack the accounts, using a strong and unique combination of passwords helps in reducing the risk.
