Beam & Stirrups Details

--------- important knowledge ---------

Type of Beam

1. Simply Supported Beam
Supported at both ends (one hinge and one roller). Freely rotates and resists vertical loads. Used in
residential buildings, bridges, etc.

2. Cantilever Beam
Fixed at one end and free at the other. Carries bending moment and shear at the fixed end. Used inbalconies and canopies.

3. Fixed Beam
Both ends rigidly fixed. No rotation at supports. Less deflection. Used in continuous frames and
industrial structures.

4. Continuous Beam
More than two supports. Reduces bending moment and deflection. Used in bridges and multi-spanstructures.

5. Overhanging Beam
Extends beyond its support. Mix of simply supported and cantilever behavior. Used in verandas andbalconies.

6. T-Beam
Slab acts as fl**ge with beam web. Common in RCC slabs and bridges.

7. L-Beam (Edge Beam)
Fl**ge only on one side. Used at slab edges and perimeters.

8. Box Beam
Hollow rectangular section. High torsional stiffness. Used in bridges and flyovers.

9. I-Beam / H-Beam (Steel)
Steel beam with I/H shape. High bending resistance. Used in steel Structures.

10. Composite Beam
Made using two materials (e.g., steel + concrete). Combines strength and economy. Used in
bridges and multi-story buildings.

------ What Are Stirrups?---------

Stirrups are closed-loop reinforcement bars used in beams and columns to hold the main longitudinal bars in position and resist shear and torsional stresses.

Types of Stirrups

1. Single-leg stirrup

2. Two-leg (Rectangular) stirrup

3. Four-leg stirrup

4. Circular stirrup

5. Helical stirrup

6. Diamond stirrup

7. Spiral stirrup

Example of Beam Stirrup

For a 230 mm × 450 mm beam,
Main bars: 4 nos (2 top + 2 bottom)
Stirrups: 8 mm Ø @ 150 mm c/c near support and @ 200 mm c/c at mid-span.

🔖 Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) for Stirrups

Length of one stirrup =
= 2 × (width + depth) + (hook allowance) – (cover on both sides)

Example:
Beam = 230 × 450 mm, cover = 25 mm, bar Ø = 8 mm
→ (2 × (180 + 400)) + (2 × 10 × 8) = 1160 mm (approx.)
