World Day Against Child Labour 2021
World Day against Child Labour is an ILO (International Labour Organisation) sanctioned holiday. It was launched in the year 2002 as an attempt to spread awareness and raise activism against Child Labour. Hundreds of millions of boys and girls are subjected to child labour as per a report by the ILO. They are deprived of basic needs such as Education, Healthcare, and Freedom. More than half of these children are exposed to the worst forms of child labour which include working in hazardous work environments and slavery. On every 12th of June, World Day against Child Labour is marked to spread awareness and reality to the people

➤What is Child Labour?

Child Labour is any act that leads to the endangerment of a child and deprives children of schooling or adding the burden of work on a child along with schooling. Child Labour violates the International Law against the protection of children which includes:-

• Prohibition against all unconditional forms of activities such as slavery and the use of any child for prostitution or similar activities.

• Prohibition of children from work till they are legally allowed to do that type of work as set by the national legislation. This is following international standards.

➤World Day Against Child Labour 2021 theme:

This year, the theme of World Day Against Child Labour is 'Act Now: End Child Labour'. Amid the coronavirus pandemic and global crisis, there has been a drastic surge in child labour across the world due to people facing employment woes.

➤History

The International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations body that regulates the global community of work, established the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002. It guarantees a normal childhood for the many children aged 5 to 17 by supplying them with appropriate education, suitable medical services, leisure time, or simply fundamental liberties.

➤Significance

June 12 is designated as World Day Against Child Labour to draw awareness to the international issue of child labour and to develop solutions to end it. The day is observed to raise knowledge about the negative mental and physical concerns that children who are pushed into child labour endure across the world. The day also serves as a chance for individuals to create effective tools to tackle the causes that contribute to child labour.

➤World Day against Child Labour Theme 2020

World Day against Child Labour will be celebrated on 12th June 2020. This year the maximum focus will be on the children who have been suffering through and because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The poor and helpless children are the first to suffer from any pandemic disease because of minor resources. The theme for World Day against Child Labour 2020 is “COVID-19: Protect Children from Child Labour, now more than ever!“. As an individual, you can make some minor changes through your actions.

• Do not buy any product or goods from a child of below 18years or a business which promotes child labour.

• Educate each and everyone regarding the Child Labour Issue.

• Raise voice against companies, brands, shops, or industries that force children to work.

• Help the poor whenever you can, by giving them employment, food, or anything that suits you. This will ensure that their condition doesn’t pass on to the next generation.

• Create awareness through conducting seminars in workplaces, schools, universities, communities, societies, etc.

➤World Day against Child Labour Theme 2019

The International Labour Organization celebrated a century of promoting decent work and advancing social justice. The theme for World Day against Child Labour was “Children shouldn’t work in fields but on dreams!”. This quote itself explains a lot about the budding child labour issue in the world.

➤Facts and Figures

• 218 million children in the age group of 5 and 17 worldwide are employed and 152 million of them are victims of child labour.

• Almost half of the child labour in the world is found in Africa, followed by Asia and America.

• Statistically, every 1 in 5 children in Africa are victims of Child Labour.

• Among the 152 million, 88 million are boys and 64 million are girls.

• 62% of all children in hazardous work are boys. Boys face a greater risk of being subjected to child labour.

• 71% of the Child Labour is concentrated in Agriculture including Fishing, Forestry, Livestock Herding, and Aquaculture

➤Projects against Child Labour

• Direct Action

• Legislation and Policy Development

• Advocacy and Awareness Raising

• Institutional Development

• Social Services and Poverty Alleviation.

The magnitude of these projects is being increased every year to have a better and sustainable effect. The IPEC (International Programme for Elimination of Child Labour) has divided these projects into national and global projects. These projects focus on the root level of Child Labour and the worldwide problem of Child Labour respectively.

➤Campaigns and Advocacy

• Music against Child Labour Initiative – The music against Child Labour initiative was a campaign that was started in 2013. It was made possible with the help of ILO’s partnership with various musical institutions. Musicians and Music Education Bodies also play a part in this initiative. It was an important step in the awareness campaign of ILO against Child Labour and to support the World Day against Child Labour.

• Red Card to Child Labour – In several Sports, especially Football, a Red Card is liable to exclusion from the field. The ILO and IPEC decided in 2002 to use the Red Card as a symbol to challenge and eliminate Child Labour from its roots.

• The ‘SCREAM’ Initiative – The ‘SCREAM’ means Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, Art, and Media. It is an initiative to educate the youth of the world about Child Labour to spread awareness about this sensitive topic with the younger generations.
