History and celebration of World Music day – Do you know, apart from International yoga day, there is another day that is celebrated on 21June? Music Day, also known as The Fête de la Musique, is an annual music celebration held on 21 June. On this day, people are allowed to play music outside in public spaces and parks. In October 1981, in France, Maurice Fleuret became the Director of Music and Dance at Minister of Culture Jack Lang’s request. He promoted the creation of music festivals.
Maurice Fleuret in 1982, discovered that one in two children in France played a musical instrument. After that, he began to dream to bring people out on the streets. The first music day took place in 1982 in Paris as the Fête de la Musique.
Since then, the festival is celebrated all over the world on the same day in more than 120 countries including India, China, Germany, Greece, Russia, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the United States, the UK, and Japan.
According to another theory, in 1976 in France, an American musician named Joel Cohen introduced music celebration to mark the beginning of the summer and since then the entire world celebrates this day as World Music Day on June 21.
