GIST OF THE CHAPTER
"A Letter to God" is a story of a petty farmer whose name is Lencho, a hardworking and God- fearing peasant who lives with his family on the crest of a low hill and eagerly waiting for a downpour that will assure him a rich harvest. He shares his hope with his wife that it is going to rain today. As the family settles down for dinner, Lencho,s prediction about the rainfall comes true. They all welcomed the rainfall and started running here and there. They went out for no other reason than to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body.
Lencho was so happy that he exclaimed "These aren't raindrops falling from sky, they are new coins. The big drops are ten cent pieces and the little ones are fives.
But gradually the big drops of rain turned into a hailstones. Lencho said in metaphorical tone that these truly resemble frozen pearls, as he thought it will pass away soon but it lasted for an hour and the entire field was white, as if covered with salt. Not a leaf remained on the trees. The corn was totally destroyed. Lencho's soul filled with sadness. When the storm had passed, he stood in the middle of the field and said to his sons, " A plague of locusts would have left more than this. The hail has left nothing. There is no one who can help us, we will go hungry this year. but he did not leave hope when no one helps you there is single hope : help from God. He gathered all the positivity and decided to write a letter to God as it was his last ray of hope. "God" he wrote, " if you don't help me, my family and I will go hungry this year. I need a hundred pesos in order to sow my field again to live until the crop comes.." He put the letter inside the envelope and went to the town to post it, he was pretty sure that God will definitely help him.One of post office employees saw that letter and started laughing as he had never been on the address which was mentioned, and showed to the postmaster he also laughed on it but immediately he turned serious and tapped the letter on the desk and commented, "What a faith! I wish I had a faith of the man who wrote this letter. So in order not to shake his faith in God he asked his employees to give his part of salary as it is an act of charity, but it was impossible for him to gather hundred pesos, so he was only able to collect seventy five pesos. He put the money in the envelope and signed a single letter 'God'.
Next Sunday Lencho came bit earlier and asked about the letter, postman handed the letter to him while the postmaster experiencing the contentment of a man who performed a good deed.
Lencho was not surprised to see the money as he was sure on that but as he counted he became angry and said God can not make a mistake. He immediately went up to the window to ask for paper and ink and wrote another letter and put in the envelope and dropped it into the mailbox. The postmaster went to open it, he wrote "God : of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached me. Send me the rest, since I need it very much. But don't send it to me through the mail because the post office employees are a bunch of crooks. Lencho.".....
