The “ ” is a phenomenon which occurs twice in a year; it takes place when the sun is at a 90- degree angle to the Earth’s surface or when the sun is just overhead. This moment makes the person’s or any object's shadow completely disappear for few minutes.

Zero shadow day, is a day on which the sun does not cast a shadow of an object at noon.

Zero shadow can be observed for about a minute twice a year in the city.

The sun is not positioned exactly above us everyday as zero shadow day happens only in countries situated between the tropic of Capricorn and the tropic of Cancer.

It is considered that Eratosthenes, a Greek mathematician had calculated the circumference of the earth on zero shadow day,”

OF OF
India is a country. Democracy means a system of government where people of the country exercise their power to vote and choose their representatives by voting for them in elections. Thus, in India, the Constitution guarantees Fundamental Rights to all the citizens of the country to choose government of their choice.

India has 29 states and 7 union territories. State also means a country that is controlled by one government. The Indian state has government of its own and has many responsibilities or duties towards the people of the state. The Constitution gives the state several powers to carry out these duties.

India has two types of .

The or government is the government of the whole country. It looks after the needs, welfare and safety of the people of the country. It has its offices in New Delhi, the capital of India.

Each of India has its own government which looks after the welfare of the people of that state. In a federal system of government there is division of powers of between the central or union government and the state.

The or the Rashtrapati is the head of our country, India. The Governor or the Rajyapal is the head of the state.

The Minister is the head of the government at the centre. The Chief Minister is the head of the government in the state. Both has the power to choose their Council of Ministers.

refer to a piece of natural vegetation that is protected by a certain community due to religious reasons. The area is usually dedicated to a local deity. As a result, local communities tend to take responsibility to protect and nurture the area. It could be only a few trees or an entire forest. NGOS play an important role in working with the local residents to keep these areas safe, while their motives may be mostly restricted to ecological balance.

: A state known for its stunning natural beauty, Kerala is home to 240 sacred groves. These areas contain more than 3000 rare species of plants. Spread over more than 20 hectares, the largest grove is in Ernakulam.

Pradesh: The state with the highest number of sacred groves, Himachal Pradesh is meticulous and extremely careful about these natural settings. Shipin is believed to be the largest deodar grove and contains trees that are thousands of years old.

: The groves in Maharashtra are called deorais or devrais and are concentrated in Pune, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Kolhapur. A rare variety of biodiversity prevails in these areas. The entire state contains approximately 250 groves.

: Known as sarnas, the groves in Bihar are fairly small and only consist of 2 to 20 trees. Full of creepers, shrubs and grasses, these trees are generally collected in the Chotanagpur region.

: These regions in Rajasthan take up various names- oraans of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, kenkris of Ajmer, vanis of Mewar, shamlet dehsof Alwar. The largest area is covered by oraans that provide a different set of biodiversity in distinctive areas.

: Home to some of the richest groves in the country, Khasi hills in Meghalaya have one grove called law kyntangs in almost every village. Two of the largest ones are Mawphlang and Mausmai. The popular myth surrounding the forests dictate that anyone damaging the plants and trees of the grove will be killed by the forest spirit. This myth has kept people from destroying the area and thus, it is one of the best preserved natural areas.

National is a horizontal tricolour of India saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and India green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of width of the flag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the white band is a navy-blue wheel which represents the chakra.

The top saffron colour, indicates the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The green shows the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.

Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes. The design of the National Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 22 July 1947.

It is really amazing to see the various changes that our National Flag went through since its first inception. It was discovered or recognised during our national struggle for freedom. The evolution of the Indian National Flag sailed through many vicissitudes to arrive at what it is today.

In 1921, Venkayya first presented a rudimentary design of the national flag to Mahatma Gandhi in Vijayawada.

A is a solid box whose every surface is a square of same area.

Take an empty box with open top in the shape of a cube whose each edge is 2 cm. Now fit cubes of edges 1 cm in it. From the figure it is clear that 8 such cubes will fit in it. So the volume of the box will be equal to the volume of 8 unit cubes together.

Therefore, the volume of the cube = 8 cu cm

Note that 8 = 2 × 2 × 2

Thus, volume of a cube = side × side × side = side cube

1. Find the volume of a cube whose edge is 5 cm long.

Solution:

The length of an edge = 5 cm

Volume of a cube = side of edge × side of edge × side of edge

Volume of a cube = 5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm

= 125 cu cm

= 125 cm3

2. Find the volume of a cube of side 7 cm.

Solution:
We know, volume of a cube = (side × side × side) cubic units.

Here, side = 7 cm.

= 7 × 7 × 7

= 343

is famous as the 'lord of the rings',
Even though the other three giant gas planets – Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune – also have rings.

's system takes pride of place, since its rings are extremely bright and very large.

For a very long time, Saturn was thought to be the only planet in our solar system with rings. The rings around Saturn were discovered by an astronomer called Galileo Galilei nearly 400 years ago. He used a very simple telescope that he constructed himself from lenses and pointed it at the planets in the night sky. One of the first objects he looked at was Saturn. At first he thought that Saturn had two large moons on either side of the planet because his telescope wasn’t very good and only produced very blurry images.

Since then, astronomers – who study the universe and everything in it, like planets – have used bigger and better telescopes to find rings around all of the outer gas giant planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. These planets, unlike others in our system, consist largely of gas.

Long ago, in a place called Nazareth, lived a woman named Mary. She was a hardworking woman who was always good to others. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, who was also good at heart. One day, God sent an angel to Mary, by the name of Gabriel. The angel told her that God was sending a holy spirit to Earth to help people – that soul would be born as Mary’s son, and she would name him Jesus. Mary was worried about how this was possible since she wasn’t married, but the angel assured her that it would be a miracle from God. The angel also told her that her cousin, Elizabeth, who had no children, would also give birth to a baby called John, who would prepare the way for Jesus's birth.

On hearing this, Mary consented to God’s will. She went to meet Elizabeth and returned after three months. By then, she was pregnant. This worried Joseph, who wondered if he should call off the wedding. But one night, while he was asleep, an angel visited him and told him about God’s will, and urged him to marry Mary. Joseph woke up the next morning and decided that he would make Mary his wife.

After the wedding, Joseph and Mary made a trip to Bethlehem, the place where Joseph’s family came from. However, when they reached there, they could not find a place to stay as the village was crowded. So, they decided to stay in a barn where animals lived. It was there that Mary gave birth to the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

The birth of Jesus was signified by a bright star in the sky. Wise men from different parts of the world understood the significance of this star and followed it to reach Bethlehem. They brought along gifts for the baby and his parents. In other parts of Bethlehem, where shepherds were grazing their sheep, angels appeared to give them the good news. They sang and made merry to welcome the Holy Spirit to earth.

Since then, this day has been celebrated as Christmas. People go to church at midnight to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. They exchange gifts, sing carols, and enjoy themselves.

The is the moment in the year when Earth is tilted as far away from the sun as it will be all year. The winter solstice results in the shortest day of the year, meaning it has the longest period of darkness.

The winter solstice happens every year when the Sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.4 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted farthest away from the Sun, delivering the fewest hours of sunlight of the year.

are on the basis of their measures.

1. Acute Angle:

An angle whose measure is less than 90° is called an acute angle. In other words, an angle measuring between 0° to 90° is called an acute angle. ∠ABC in the given figure is an acute angle.

2.Right Angle:

An angle whose measure is 90° is called right angle.

In other words, an angle which measure exactly 90° is called a right angle.

Two lines that meet at a right angle are called perpendicular lines. In the above figure, ∠AOB is a right angle. In this case, we say that the arms OA and OB are perpendicular to each.

Therefore, ∠AOB shown in adjoining figure is 90°.

So, ∠AOB is a right angle.

3.Obtuse Angle:

An angle whose measure is greater than 90° but less than 180° is called an obtuse angle.

In other words, an angle measuring between 90° to 180° is called an obtuse angle.∠DOQ shown in the above figure is an obtuse angle.

4. Straight Angle:

An angle whose measure is 180° is called a straight angle.

In other words, an angle which measures exactly 180° is called a straight angle.

∠XOY shown in the above figure is a straight angle.

A straight angle is equal to two right angles.

5. Reflex Angle:

An angle whose measure is more than 180° but less than 360° is called a reflex angle.

∠AOB shown in the above figure is 210°.

So, ∠AOB is a reflex angle.

Types of angles are discussed here according to their degree measure.

Angles are classified on the basis of their measures.

1. Acute Angle:

An angle whose measure is less than 90° is called an acute angle.

In other words, an angle measuring between 0° to 90° is called an acute angle. ∠ABC in the given figure is an acute angle.

∠MON shown in adjoining figure is equal to 60°. So, ∠MON is an acute angle.

2. Right Angle:

An angle whose measure is 90° is called right angle.

In other words, an angle which measure exactly 90° is called a right angle.

Two lines that meet at a right angle are called perpendicular lines.

In the above figure, ∠AOB is a right angle. In this case, we say that the arms OA and OB are perpendicular to each.

Therefore, ∠AOB shown in adjoining figure is 90°.

So, ∠AOB is a right angle.

3. Obtuse Angle:

An angle whose measure is greater than 90° but less than 180° is called an obtuse angle.

In other words, an angle measuring between 90° to 180° is called an obtuse angle.

Obtuse Angle
∠DOQ shown in the above figure is an obtuse angle.

4. Straight Angle:

An angle whose measure is 180° is called a straight angle.

In other words, an angle which measures exactly 180° is called a straight angle.

Straight Angle
∠XOY shown in the above

5. Zero Angle:

An angle measure 0° is called a zero angle.

When two arms of an angle lie on each other, 0° angle is formed.

of

An angle whose degree measure is greater than the degree measure of another angle is a greater angle. Thus, we can say that:

Acute Angle < Right Angle < Obtuse Angle < Straight Angle < Reflex Angle.
