ऑक्टोपसचे आत्मघातकी प्रजनन 🦑
प्रजननानंतरचे दिवस हे ऑक्टोपस मादीच्या आयुष्यातील अखेरचे दिवस असतात. आयुष्यात फक्त एकदाच प्रजनन करून मृत्यू पावणाऱ्या ऑक्टोपससारख्या प्राण्यांना 'सीमेलपॅरस' प्राणी म्हंटले जाते. ऑक्टोपसची मादी अंडी घातल्यावर अन्नपाणी सोडते आणि अंड्यातून पिल्ले बाहेर येईपर्यंत हळूहळू अशक्त होऊन मरून जाते. बंदीवासातील मादी ऑक्टोपस ही तर अंडी घातल्या घातल्या टँकच्या कोपऱ्यात धडका मारून, स्वतःच आपली त्वचा फाडून घेऊन, प्रसंगी आपल्या स्वतःच्या भुजा तोडून खाते आणि मृत्यू पत्करते. पण जर कोणाला असे वाटत असेल की ऑक्टोपस नर सुखी असतात तर तो एक भ्रम आहे. बहुतांश वेळा मादी ऑक्टोपस स्वतःच नरांना मारून खातात किंवा तसं नाही झालं तरी मीलनानंतर तेही स्वतःच मरून जातात. हे का घडतं ते नक्की माहिती नाही. पण शिकागो विद्यापीठातील एका संशोधनानुसार असं दिसून आलं आहे की ऑक्टोपसच्या मेंदूत दोन डोळ्यांच्या मधोमध असणारी 'ऑप्टिक' ग्रंथी यात महत्त्वाची भूमिका निभावते. काही प्रयोगांमध्ये असं दिसलं आहे की ही ग्रंथी काढून टाकली तर ऑक्टोपस आत्महत्या करत नाहीत आणि अगदी पुन्हा प्रजनन सुद्धा करतात. याचा अर्थ असा की ही ग्रंथी ऑक्टोपसला आत्महत्या करण्यास प्रवृत्त करणारा एखादा हॉर्मोन निर्माण करत असावी. पण त्याबद्दल अजून नक्की माहिती नाही.

The final days of a female octopus after it reproduces are quite grim, at least to human eyes. Octopuses are semelparous animals, which means they reproduce once and then they die. After a female octopus lays a clutch of eggs, she quits eating and wastes away; by the time the eggs hatch, she dies. In the later stages, some females in captivity even seem to intentionally speed along the death spiral, banging into the sides of the tank, tearing off pieces of skin or eating the tips of their own tentacles. If you're wondering, the males don't get off any easier. Females often kill and eat their mates; if not, they die a few months later, too. According to a research in Chicago university, a gland in the brains of Octopuses located in between the eyes, known as 'Optic gland' might be secreting a hormone that instigates them to commit su***de. They may mate or even reproduce again if this gland is removed. However, the substance produced by the gland is not known yet.
