LEST WE FORGET - As Remembrance Day approaches, so I am reminded of the sacrifice made by soldiers, the world over, who have fought for the greater good, love of their nation, kith and kin. They pledged their lives with selfless love and unstinting valour to right a wrong, for a just cause, with the single mindedness that peace will eventually prevail - so that every child, each and every night, can sleep a sweet slumber with the assurance and knowledge that when they got up the next morning they would be loved, cared for; and the hope that the world was not quite as evil as some made it out to be.
Shobhna and Shubi are two such soldiers who will find the strength to rise from the ashes of despair, undeterred, as I know they will: to continue on the path they have trodden, to pursue a dream, resolute in their desire to prevail: to give, to serve, to continue to want to love those little helpless hungry tired unloved souls, to give them hope and a chance at life.

WE WERE ROBBED AND BEATEN
At Satyaram Girls High School (SRGHS), around 2:00 am on November 3, 2015, six masked men forcibly entered the school premises, broke open the bedroom door and commit dacoity.
Whilst, my sister Shubi and I were sleeping in the bedroom, the door to the bedroom was smashed open and six persons charged in screaming. Both of us jumped out of the bed when masked persons pushed me back and I fell on the side table and one of them hit my sister with a steel rod, twice on her head and on the upper arm. We shouted for help but none of the two guards came to our help. The dacoity lasted for about 20 minutes when they opened all the drawers and asked where is the money and started demanding where was the gold chain?
The masked men opened the Godrej Almirah and started strewing the clothes out in search of money and repeatedly asking for the gold chain. One person said : “usne kaha tha ki sone ki chain hai “ (he had said there was a gold chain). On their aggressively asking for the gold chain from me one said again Mummy sone ki chain kahan hai.”
One of the persons asked me: “ Mummy yeh kaun hai pointing to my sister. Yeh tumahari Saas hein? “ My sister replied Saas nahin, badi behen hain.
Around 2:35 am on 3 November 2015, when the masked persons had left the premises, I called my husband, Sanjiv Nundy. As the police number 100 was not working, my sister Shubhlakshmi Singh called her husband, Col. R P Singh, who contacted the Lakhimpur Police station to inform the incident. My sister called the police contact No. 9454417444 which informed us that police help was on the way.
At about 2:45 am, Sanjay, one of the workers who stays in the guard hut, came and peeped through the office door saying that police had come and were asking to open the gate. My sister Shubhlakshmi told him to open the gate to let the police in the school compound. A minute later he came back and said the police are threatening if we did not open the gate soon. Shubi again yelled at him again to open the gate quickly.
The police asked why Security guards are taking so long to open the gate? To which the guards replied that their guard room door is bolted from outside and we had to jerk and shake the door to open it. In the meantime, the dacoits had escaped from the back door and the broken side wall in the rear. The police found the side wall had been broken from inside the premises. Foot and hand prints were seen on the wall between kitchen and the store room. One locked trunk taken from the store room to the back of the building was broken open near the side wall from these men had escaped. One of the guards, Vasant claimed that his mobile phone had been stolen from the guard room.
Mr. Satpreet Singh, a family friend also came to the school and took me and my sister to the District Hospital, Lakhimpur where a drip was administered to me and the open head wounds of my sister were stitched.

So Shubi (Shobhna's sister) doesn't think it is enough that she is there at the school helping Shobhna with the final finishing touches (getting: cupboards built, electricals and plumbing up and running, land levelled, furniture fit for use, CCTV installed, etc., etc.) before the girls come to school. She ends up picking up lots of plants and pots to beautify the school, as well. You rock Shubi. SRGHS adores you.

Satya Ram Girls High School thanks Shubi (Shobhna's Sister) for all the hard work, love, time and guidance she continues to pour into our school. Shubi is literally the matriarch who has guided Shobhna through thick and thin and she has continued in that wonderful role as she spends time at our school in my absence. Thank you Ravi Jijaji for sending Shubi to help Shobhna with the school and for your most generous financial contribution as well. You are both a cornerstone and foundation of the school. Thank you Shubi and Ravi Jijaji - you are loved and appreciated.

Dearest Sandhya Rai, how do we thank you and Sunil for all of your hard work, effort and assistance to Shobhna and Satya Ram Girls High School these past few weeks. You travelled all the way from Muscat to New Delhi especially to be with Shobhna to: help her plan the transfer of all the wonderful furniture that you and Sunil donated to our school; pack the clothes, pillow cases, bed sheets, and towels that you personally sewed over the past 6 months for our girls; and shop for necessary consumables and items that our girls will need over the coming months. You have been the source of inspiration to both Shobhna and me and we have come to rely on your sage advice. Thank you - you are truly a blessing to SRGHS and we are so proud that you have made SRGHS your own.
Finally, congratulations on your wedding anniversary, we wish you and Sunil a lifetime of happiness, peace, love and joy. We remain in your debt, lots of love.

Shobhna has been very busy with Shubi (sister) and Sandhya (niece): Getting 16 quilts / comforters made for our girls. Also, please note the swivel chairs they have procured for use in our computer lab.

Thanks to Pantel Technologies in Noida, India: each of our girls is getting a tablet to work with. Yes! We intend for our girls to be technically competent - so we are starting them off very young. This is all of Shobhna's doing and brainwave - one of her many pursuits that has just come to fruition. Thanks to Shubi (Shobhna's sister) as well, who is working with Pantel to identify all the learning software that is to be uploaded. However, the school will also be getting a computer lab, courtesy Nagarro in Gurgaon.
