Summary:

Inder Bir Singh Passi obtained the BA (Hons) (1958) and MA (Mathematics) (1960) degrees from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He joined Kurukshetra University (1961) and spent the years 1963-66 at the University of Exeter where he received his PhD working under D Rees. Thereafter, he stayed at Kurukshetra University until 1979, and then moved to Panjab University, Chandigarh. He was a Visiting Professor at Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad (2000-05), INSA Senior Scientist (2005-09) and is currently Professor Emeritus, Panjab University (2005- ), and Honorary Professor, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Mohali (2007- ).

Academic and Research Achievements: Specializing in algebra, Passi made several significant contributions in the area of group rings, where he investigated problems related to dimension of sub-groups, augmentation powers, (co) homology of groups, group-theoretic and algebraic aspects of group rings. He is author of Group Rings and Their Augmentation Ideals, LNM Vol. 715, Springer, 1979, and coauthor with R. Mikhailov of Lower Central and Dimension Series of Groups, LNM Vol. 1952, Springer 2009. As a result of his long-standing collaboration with his former teacher, IS Luthar, four books on algebra were published (Narosa Publishing House) in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004.

Other Contributions: Passi was Member of the National Board for Higher Mathematics, Government of India (1989-2002). He was Editor of Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society (1985-89), and a membe of the Editorial Boards of Journal of Group Theory (1998-2001), and Indian Journal of Pure Applied Mathematics (2004-2011).

Awards and Honours: Passi was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Prize for Mathematical Sciences (1983), Meghnad Saha Award for Research in Theoretical Sciences (1988), Distinguished Service Award (2003) by Mathematical Association of India, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis Medal (2011) by INSA, and Khosla National Award (2011) by IIT roorkee. He was President, Mathematics Section of Indian Science Congress during 1998/1999 and President, Indian Mathematical Society during 2006/07. He is an elected Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
