We always wonder why most fishing harbours are constructed along river banks with large backwaters (estuaries or lagoons) instead of sea shores!

Experts say, That’s because these locations offer several natural and economic advantages.

Here are the main reasons they claim:

1. Natural Protection from Waves and Storms
Backwaters and river mouths are naturally sheltered from:

Strong ocean waves

Cyclones and storm surges

High tidal currents

This reduces the need for expensive
breakwaters and artificial protection structures.

2. Calm Water for Safe Mooring
Fishing boats require:

Safe anchorage

Easy loading and unloading

Simple maintenance access

Backwaters provide calm, low-velocity water, making docking and repairs safer and easier compared to the open sea.

3. Reduced Construction Cost
Building a harbour directly on an exposed coast requires:

Long breakwaters

Heavy wave barriers

Deep dredging

In backwater regions, much of this protection is naturally available, significantly reducing infrastructure cost.

4. Natural Depth and Navigation
Many river mouths and estuaries:

Have sufficient depth for small and medium fishing vessels

Offer naturally dredged channels due to tidal action

This allows easier navigation without extensive artificial deepening.

5. Proximity to Fishing Grounds
Most productive fishing areas are located:

Near continental shelves

Around estuaries where nutrients from rivers increase fish population

So placing harbours nearby reduces travel time and fuel cost.

6. Access to Freshwater and Land Transport
Riverbank locations provide:

Freshwater supply

Road and inland transport connectivity

Nearby settlements for fish markets and labour

7. Tidal Advantage

Tides help:

Boats enter and exit easily

Natural flushing of harbour waters

Reduce stagnation and pollution

In Short

Fishing harbours are built in river backwaters because they provide:

Natural shelter

Calm waters

Lower construction cost

Easy navigation

Better fish availability

Good land connectivity

It is a combination of engineering convenience, economic efficiency, and ecological advantage.

—-!!!!—-

We agree with them.

But we should admit that it also comes with several important disadvantages:

1. Siltation and Continuous Dredging
Rivers carry large amounts of sediment (sand, silt, clay).

When river flow slows in the backwater:

Sediments settle inside the harbour basin

Navigation channels become shallow

Boats may run aground

This leads to:

Frequent dredging

High maintenance cost

Operational interruptions

2. Limited Depth for Larger Vessels

Backwaters are usually shallow compared to open sea ports.

Depth may not support larger fishing trawlers

Expansion capacity is limited

Future modernization becomes difficult

3. Flood Risk

Riverbank locations are vulnerable to:

Seasonal floods

Heavy monsoon discharge

Sudden upstream water release

Flooding can:

Damage harbour infrastructure

Wash away stored equipment

Disrupt operations

4. Water Pollution and Stagnation
Fishing harbours generate:

Fish waste

Oil spills

Fuel leakage

Domestic waste
In backwaters:

Water circulation is slower

Pollutants accumulate

Oxygen levels drop

This can harm:

Aquatic life

Public health

Nearby communities

5. Environmental Damage

Backwaters and estuaries are sensitive ecosystems:

Mangroves may be destroyed

Fish breeding grounds may be affected

Biodiversity may decline

Construction can disturb natural habitats permanently.

6. Tidal and Bar Formation Issues
At river mouths:

Sand bars may form due to wave–river interaction

Harbour entrances may get blocked

Navigation becomes difficult

Regular clearing is required.

7. Salinity Fluctuation Problems
Backwaters experience:

Freshwater inflow during rainy season

High salinity during dry season

This fluctuation can:

Corrode structures

Affect fish storage and processing systems

8. Conflict with Local Communities

Backwaters are often used for:

Traditional fishing

Aquaculture

Agriculture

Transport

Harbour construction may:

Reduce access

Create social conflicts

In Summary

While backwater locations are economical and naturally sheltered, they face challenges like:

Heavy siltation

Flooding

Pollution accumulation

Ecological disturbance

Navigation issues

That’s why proper planning, environmental impact assessment, and regular maintenance are essential.

We, Keshthana Infrastructure Private Limited, involve in Engineering Assessments, selection of location, EIA and forecasting the maintenance and operational Cost.
