*PROGRAM ON DRUG ADDICTION BY KAKROSA ARMY CAMP*

Drug abuse and addiction, now both grouped as substance or drug use disorder, is a condition characterized by a self-destructive pattern of using a substance that leads to significant problems and distress, which may include tolerance to or withdrawal from the substance.

Thousands of people, specifically youth of Kashmir are slipping into the dark alleys of drug addiction as the Valley has been flooded with huge quantities of *psychopathic drugs coming from across the borders from Pakistan* and the money generated is being used to fund terrorism. The data revealed that there has been an alarming 1500 percent increase in youth approaching the hospital seeking treatment for substance abuse in the past three years.

The fight against drug abuse starts right from spreading the right awareness about addiction. Continuing with its resolution to spread information about this evil in the society Indian Army conducted an awareness event on *Drug Addiction Prevention and Eradication in our Society* at *Government Higher Sec School, Kakrosa (Kupwara)* in conjunction with *Widows, Orphans and Disabled People's Trust, (J&K)* . This was the second awareness Campaign in the series.

The event was conducted in a very planned manner wherein all stakeholders from the society i.e *Dy CEO Handwara , Principal GHSS Kakrosa & Waisa, Sarpanches of nearby villages, Second in Comd, 15 RR, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, SOG In Charge Vilgam, Youth Services & Sports Officer Vilgam, Medical Officer Vilgam and Moulvi from Dhama Jamia Masjid* highlighted the aspects related to Drug Addiction as prevalent in their respective fields. The summary of the aspect was very well presented to the august gathering of *335 persons* by *Mr. Mohd Shafi Mir, President Widows, Orphans & Disabled People's Trust.* Also 15 selected students expressed their views on the topic.

The lecture focused on drug addiction with an objective to spread awareness, mobilise the community, its resources towards prevention of substance abuse amongst the youth. As the problem is not restricted to a specific individual or family alone, the responsibility of fighting drug abuse has to be shared by the society as whole. Hence the role of family, friends, government officials and PRIs in helping the victim in his fight against drug addiction was also highlighted through lectures. The lecture concluded with an interactive session with the students.
